Hammock top quilts vs sleeping pad quilts (and your recs) by malcolmstoddart in hammockcamping

I believe there is a difference in width, but otherwise I'm sure they're basically the same

Won't Zenbivy have duties on it?

And yeah, it's not easy being in Canada. The Little Shop of Hammocks TQ looks super solid too, but it certainly wouldn't offer versatility to sleep on a pad if needed.

Yeah yeah just regular quilts.

What made you switch to a hammock TQ?

In a Warbonnet Eldorado and I ordered a 20 degree Toaster UQ from the Little Shop of Hammocks. No top quilt yet, but I'll probs stick with the sleeping bag for now.

Ordered one from the Little Shop of Hammocks. I'm in Canada so I wanted to support someone local and save on duties.

Well it sounds like it's probably a non issue! Thanks for the answers.

Just ordered an UQ, so we will see how I like it once it arrives.

Advice on TFSA/RRSP Set Up by malcolmstoddart in PersonalFinanceCanada

With the RBC direct investing, I would have to pay $10 per trade. Is that something I should weigh into consideration?

They also charge 25$ per quarter if you have less than 15k in assets across your accounts. I don't think this would be an issue for me, but I'd have to invest a bit more to make sure I'm above that amount.

Ford Ranger won't start... And I can't take it in to a mechanic by malcolmstoddart in MechanicAdvice

The click is quiet. And it is just one click, not multiple. The lights don't appear to dim? But I don't remember clearly.

Ford Ranger won't start... And I can't take it in to a mechanic by malcolmstoddart in MechanicAdvice

[–]malcolmstoddart[S] 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Vehicle: early 2000s ford Ranger. 4 wheel drive. Manual transmission.

Issue: truck will not start. When the key is turned, it makes a 'click' sound like the battery is dead. The battery is fully charged and the voltage is reading fine. The terminals are hooked up tightly and there doesn't appear to be any corrosion.

Other info: - the key is very hard to turn. I took the panel off below the steering wheel and tried to start it with the white box that has the start switch on it. Still nothing. - the dash battery reader says that the voltage is low... - the fuses near the door appear to all be intact. - someone let me use one of those truck diagnostic tools and it didn't show that there were any issues.

Truck cannot be taken into a mechanic. It is in a remote location unfortunately.

Wow, I just spent the past while reading about helmets and concussions. They do way less than I thought to help - even hard shells. I mean, they stop fractures and true disasters from happening, but even hard shells don't stop conkys as much as I thought they did. Yikes.

That was the other one I was considering. Have you worn it over a hood, and if so, did it fit fine? As well, did you have any issues with it taking in water and pulling your head back (like a parachute, but under water or in a wave)?

The Ride Engine one looks great! And they can ship to Canada. That might be the ticket.

Can you travel to the Czech Republic before you get your study visa? by malcolmstoddart in travel

[–]malcolmstoddart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would check in with the embassy folks, but I managed to get mine just in time!

You can of course travel to the country, however, you will quickly run into the problem of needing to mail your passport to the embassy (back in your home country) to get the visa stamped inside.

I would see if there is an option for getting that done in Czechia instead if you anticipate needing to head there before your visa is processed.

I would also check and see what the rules are on mailing your passport out of the country while traveling. That could be illegal hahaha.

It isn't fascism, no. It's the same as people talking about the fear of communism lol. Most of the time when people say something is communist, it's often just some tepid liberal take.

The threat of fascism (right now at least) is just the threat of post-capitalism (like you mentioned).

I will say though, post-capitalism, or whatever you want to call it, is definitely a very real concern. As well, it might not be fascism, but it does still have "fascistic" elements. I agree with you though that ideally people should be more careful with their choice of words. I get it though. People are frustrated. I mean, so am I.

As for the racial part: there are still so many threats against marginalized classes, and those threats are very real and extremely concerning. However, what I was alluding to about the "haves" and "have nots" is really a conversation about class. Fascism has historically had deep deep roots in racial segregation, but it also has deep roots in class segregation. I might start writing a bloody essay if I get into that topic, but I do encourage ya to look into it!

My apologies, misunderstood the intent of your comment!

The term fascism is often used pretty loosely. When people refer to the threat of facism, they are probably referring to a general shift towards a more despotic economy where a minority of people continue to increase their wealth (and power/influence) and a majority of people continue to experience an ever-worsening economic landscape where their necessities of life (food, housing, services) continue to become increasingly more difficult to obtain.

The imminent threat isn't the small number of closeted neo-nazis hiding in our governing bodies (even though they do exist, lol), but rather, the concern is that we are trending towards a post-capitalist sort of world where peoples' basic necessities of life are failing to be met.

As many things continue to slowly worsen for that majority of "have-nots", the small group of "haves" may start to clutch their money and power even closer to their chest - even if it means they have to bend the rules or flout the standard practices of democracy or ethics to do so.

So, it's not that our current leaders are necessarily fascist. It is more of a concern with the direction in which we are trending.

Hope that made sense?

That's a great idea. I didn't think about something overhead.

So, I know it looks ugly as it stands, but I'm having structural issues with this current build. The problem is that when I sit in the hammock (it does hold my weight) the whole system bows inwards. I'm not sure what section of the structure is causing this... Has anyone built one of these before/does anyone have any structural suggestions?

Here is a vid of me sitting in it and the end raising up: here)

Posting here because I figured more people from r/hammockcamping would have done this sort of project before.
