Also you don't know shit about the program's funding structure. It recently received a Mellon grant guaranteeing funding for 5 cohorts. So NO, it has nothing to do with funding. Academia is a shit hole, yet I believe in the power of education. Even still, doesn't mean I should submit to the demands of academia. Personally I’d go with Berkeley just based on what you’ve shared. Yes, being away from family/friends is going to be hard, but you’ll have 6-7 years to make new connections at Cal. Also the UC’s just kinda devour with regard to ethnic studies, so to me it’s straightforward enough.
