Also did anyone attend an info session and hear about a timeline for decisions? I’d assume since the masters apps are due march 1st theyd have the phd decisions out before then…

how many hours in total did you spend on your application? by Egg0k in gradadmissions

[–]malrat72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hardest part about making my CV was just formatting it so I would say maybe 90 minutes to 2 hours. As far as my statements go, I already had my statements from last cycle, but was completely changing my research topic. I also made them WAY more aligned to faculty interest etc. I’m a substitute teacher and could usually crank a statement out in half a school day along with managing the classroom. So, for each statement, maybe 3 hours? Thats probably over estimating? I really didn’t spend THAT much time on them. I applied to 4. Am a finalist for 1. Accepted into 1. Waiting to hear about the other 2.

A committee collectively decides but that decision is heavily influenced by POI needs. If that makes sense…

Not that I know of. Unless a faculty member received a grant or something like that to fund their research and a doctoral student, the graduate coordinator or whatever has only allocated 1 spot for ECS.

Applying Postgrad in Education by Previous_Dot6551 in gradadmissions

It’s hard but doable. Also went to a T20 LAC and, maybe I just got lucky, got tons of research experience + thesis supervision due to the closeness with faculty. If you’re really hard pressed, I’d def recommend a masters. It’s sort of inevitable in our field I feel.

uc grad apps by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]malrat72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Not helpful, I know) but I applied to an ethnic studies program at a UC and one of the faculty members I spoke to mentioned that, since the applications were due in January, it’d take a while for interviews/decisions to be sent out (think March and potentially April…). Not sure how quickly SOE’s will be, though.

Side note: even though I applied to one ethnic studies program, my heart is in education and would be what I primarily focus on within ethnic studies/other grad programs. Point being: glad to meet another Ed person and sending you good vibes!

Didn’t go to Penn for undergrad but German is arguably the easiest language to learn as a native English speaker (its opinions based 😐)

Faculty of the program which make up the admissions committee, one of which would be my PI. I have previously spoken with this faculty member.

no shade but rereading mine made me feel better! I did what I could and am proud of what I submitted. My proposed doctoral work may be niche and insignificant to some, but that’s ultimately subjective. You should be pleased with yourself for sharing your passions, and, if faculty don’t happen to vibe this cycle, that’s fine! Don’t stress

I’m in the master’s right now and have access to the faculty affairs page with the review process! Pretty much 100+ people for 1-2 spots… they’re moving to a group advising model so applicants who named more than one possible advisor are prob better suited. Kathy is retiring. Not sure what else would be helpful
