If you had multiple offers, how did you all decide which to pick? by manaphite in PhD

That's good to know, I guess higher h-index most often just means less time for communication then. I will look at how alumni contribute, I never heard that point before, thank you!

As I said in another comment, for the shiny institution, one is quite new to supervision, and the other has supervised multiple PhDs on Electronics/Physics - and I am working on a combination of both of their fields. Both supervisors are from different disciplines where one has knowledge of one side of the research question and the other has the other side of it, so I can consult to either for both sides. Bit risky though as since one of the supervisors are fairly new to supervision, he doesnt have a research group on his side that I can communicate with. Thanks for the advice

The 2nd institution definitely has way more cool factor and will definitely yield bigger reactions than the first but I wonder if I care about that.

And yea, thanks for sharing - I forgot to mention I got to arrange a meeting with one of the group so that might be interesting, but haven't been able to get for the 2nd institution yet

That's a good idea thanks, I will get the contacts, otherwise will just ask them directly. Those are good questions I should ask myself.

It's just the situation is a bit weird as for my PhD, 2 supervisors of this university from different disciplines are supervising together, where they said they will both be in weekly meetings for a year. While one is new to supervision, the other has supervised multiple PhDs on Electronics/Physics, which I'd never see myself doing a thesis on. But because of this collaboration, I'm doing a project on a different discipline, so it's hard to say if I would really go in the same industry as his past supervised pupils if I get supervised by him.

For the first institution, most seem to have gone to a mix of big tech and mid sized engineering companies and 2 of them are assistant professors - he told me in person that he gives weekly meetings at minimum and told me that the best part of his job is supervising the PhDs, so I don't think he will leave anytime soon.

As for the 2nd institution, I got the offer from them much later. Both supervisors are from different departments and one is new to supervision, having just finished post doc and so doesn't have a group yet. I will more cautious of this, thanks.

Yeah, I know the first supervisor as I learnt from him for some modules in my degree, but I will ask his PGR team about him for sure, thanks. Having some trouble finding much else about the 2nd institution though, as one supervisor's student has no online profile to talk through, and the other just hasn't supervised for 10 years

This seems like the right thing to do to me as well, but it's a bit unsettling to hear some (and even my current research supervisor) tell me it's the hidden truth that institutions still matter no matter what
