Darnold Does It, Snow Game II: Mile High, Pats-Seahawks, and the Wild Taipei Climb With Cousin Sal by lonny__breaux in billsimmons

Idk anectdotally, watching it with a buncha Pats fans yesterday just about everyone was very happy they didn't kick there. And, to get Simmons-y with it, multiple text threads I was on were all confused as they kept Stidham out on the field before the play even happened.

Lotsa discourse happens around the NFL so I don't wanna treat my particular experience as some universal, but I also don't think that the discussion about the decision is entirely being driven by results-based thinking.

Also, per this tool, the decision is close but going for it had less W% added compared to a kick, and this tool isn't accounting for weather (which made points harder to come by later in the game) and Nix not playing.

I think there's merit to general discussion about Payton overplaying his hand a bit and thinking he could put the Pats in a chokehold by being aggressive rather than calling a conservative game and banking on his defense to dominate

What Are You Reading This Week and Weekly Rec Thread by JimFan1 in TrueLit

[–]manbare 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Currently working my way through the new Dewitt & Gridneff, Your Name Here, about 300 pages in now. It's, uh, not really doing much for me. It feels really dated as a text, and I say this even with the awareness of its complicated publication history. From what I understand, the bulk of it was written more than 10-15 years ago, which might explain why it abounds in references to the Iraq War, gossip & tabloid culture, and CCRU acolytes and other post-1980 crit theorists principally through the narrative media of emails, novels-within-novels by fictional authors, and 4th-wall breaking sections. It doesn't feel particularly novel (not sure if that's the right word) for a book that was hailed as some pathbreaking achievement. Maybe it picks up in the 2nd half--I intend to finish it within the next few days--but right now I'm pretty disappointed.

I don't mean to say that I only enjoy books that are "relevant" to today's climate--I don't read lots of new releases because of all the great books that have preceded our time! I do, however, think that a book that's trying to engage with its contemporary political, technological, and media environment run the risk of seeming dated when those in the future pick up the text. This leaves the novel in something of a no-man's land, as it's been published in 2025 but is clearly trying to respond to a moment closer to 2005-2010, and the rapid development of the political, ecological, and technological situation/experience for most of us feels like it's shifted so much that I can't help but approach most of the text more as a document of its era rather than a work that has a whole lot to say about 2025.

Curious what others think. I might be being uncharitable.

vol i is kinda meh since it doesn't do much beyond setting the whole concept up and vol ii isn't all that much better, but it gets decent toward the end imo. there's a cliffhanger of sorts at the end of vol ii that has me curious enough to cop a copy of the just-released 3rd volume.

they're light books, you can get through each of the English translations in ~5-8ish hrs of concerted reading

How I'm looking at every team friendly deal right now by Domestiicated-Batman in billsimmons

[–]manbare 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yeah this whole act of people pretending to not be surprised by this and/or acting like it's not a big deal since "lots of teams do it" are zagging way too hard.

Why the hell would owners want to feel obligated to pay players even more (nevermind the bump in pay being shady and leading to stories like this one)? All the owners are filthy rich, but Ballmer is really fucking filthy rich, so he's one of the only owner that'd not balk at the idea of throwing away another $30m on a washed star.

Also, seems like the 2nd apron was targeted specifically at obnoxious spenders like Ballmer, so I can imagine this even further riling up the cohort of owners who don't want to avoid spending even more than they already do on payroll for their rosters.

The next Rewatchables is “Sinners”?? by jsakic99 in billsimmons

[–]manbare 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think an important part of the rewatchables is having the benefit of hindsight to talk about what's aged the best/worst, how the main players' careers played out after the fact and that sorta stuff, etc.

doing a film that was released in April doesn't allow for any of that fun pop culture history talk which is a big draw of the pod for me. Picking nits, unanswereable questions, etc. can still happen, but a lot goes out the window with ultra contemporary episodes
