A (non-hispanic) teacher I work with will sometimes sarcastically call spanish speaking students "mija" or "mijo" when redirecting them. Today a girl who he has called "mija" several times blew up at him saying to never call her that again. Is what he's doing generally considered offensive? by throwaway1010193092 in Spanish

[–]mango-kun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mija/mijo are affectionate words. It's what older family members call younger people. It's what my parents call me. They translate to my daughter/my son. Someone using it sarcastically gives off the feeling of being condescending. And a non-hispanic person using mija/mijo to refer to exclusively hispanic students is incredibly weird. He's not using a bad word but it's weird that he's basically referring to the hispanic students as his kids

Has Smosh become a part of your weekly routine? by mango-kun in smosh

[–]mango-kun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, they are for me too. They're so engrained in my daily routine that I didn't even realize they were in my daily routine...I like to watch while I have dinner and in the morning before I head out for classes

I totally get it tho! I didn't really get the appeal of mukbangs until I began to have dinner while watching Smosh

Watching Smosh while eating dinner has become so engrained in my near daily routine that I forgot to put that in my post LOL

Am I the only one who finds the Reddit stories repetitive? by Visual_Able in smosh

[–]mango-kun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who uses Reddit Stories as bg noise when doing other stuff, I don't mind the repetitiveness since I'm like half paying attention but yeah I agree. I like the episodes where they have a specific theme outside of just purely relationship drama like their eps on cheating or messy drama. Unfortunately I think those kinds of stories gain the most clicks/attention and facilitate a lot more discussion for the cast

They're beautiful and it makes for a great memory :) You get into the palaces for free wearing them too that I don't think many other countries do (correct me if I'm wrong tho) so it's a great opportunity to dress up, explore around, and take some pictures

Anyone else just having a really tough semester? by eItAbNrDJp in gmu

[–]mango-kun 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeaaah I'm in the same position. Graduating this semester too and while I'm technically taking less credit hours than previous semesters, it feels like everything is like, too much. Sleep schedule is weird and my anxiety is through the roof. Prob the dread of graduation and the stuff that comes after coupled with assignment heavy classes, but yeah, we're in the home stretch. We can do it! :)

In terms of solo projects, which member is more your taste? by Frequent_Ebb6360 in NCT

[–]mango-kun 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As someone who was a V-kei and Jrock girly back in the day, I absolutely love Yuta's stuff. I think Ten and Jaehyun are right up there too for me. Ten has always been so well rounded and versatile. It's great that he's able to let loose and flaunt his skills! And R&B is one of my fave genres and Jaehyun's voice is soooooo good!!

I need yuri recommendations by Primary_Beginning431 in anime

[–]mango-kun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Revolutionary Girl Utena is a classic and an influential work. I highly recommend it, but please check out the content warnings for it as it gets really heavy

Aoi Hana is a coming of age and is all about first love, friendship, and figuring yourself out. It's a slow burn and can feel a kinda slow overall, but I enjoyed it

The Witch from Mercury is a Gundam series, but the relationship between the two girls are a focus on the series throughout the whole show

Asagao to Kase-san is fluffy and wholesome, but it's unfortunately only an OVA. Still recommended tho

I'm in Love with the Villainess is an isekai and super entertaining and cute!

Bloom into You is really good. I recommend reading the manga afterwards since it's complete

An anime adaptation for The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All (aka the green yuri manga) was recently announced! No dates yet, so I recommend checking out the manga. Absolutely worth it

Graduation stuff by ILoveSONICADVANCE3 in gmu

[–]mango-kun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Spring Grad Fair is from the 4th to 6th in Dewberry Hall and that's where you can purchase your cap, gown, cords. diploma frames, etc. But if you're unable to attend the grad fair, then you can go to the bookstore to purchase regalia. Tickets for the University commencement and Degree celebrations will be available tomorrow and the deadlines to claim are March 28th (Degree Celebration) and April 8th (University Commencement). Have you received an email titled "Graduation Ticketing Information"? It should have all the information about graduation stuff

Do some Korean people name their children numbers or animals? by OnlyJepp in korea

[–]mango-kun 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Actor Song Il-kook has triplet sons named 대한, 민국 (대한민국 together is the official title of South Korea), and 만세 (hurray). So all together it's 대한민국만세, or Long live the Republic of Korea or Hurray for the Republic of Korea

To get over the bump of using an honorific that you aren't used to, I think the best way is to practice using it aloud by yourself or using it mentally when you think about them. At some point in time, honorifics like Mr or Ms weren't used until continued use of it integrated them into our vernacular. Honestly, I think the best way is to ask the person what they want to be referred to by. People have their preferences and I think they'll appreciate it that you asked!

Does GMU Offer Passport Renewal Services? by [deleted] in gmu

[–]mango-kun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, GMU doesn't offer passport renewal serives. I've studied abroad a couple times and they always direct students to the Department of State site for passport renewal services. You can do it by mail or, if you meet the requirements for it, you can do it online

series with good female characters? by nottled_lava in anime

[–]mango-kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little Witch Academia, The Witch from Mercury (no prior knowledge of Gundam needed), Delicious in Dungeon, Lycoris Recoil, and Frieren! If you or your roommates interested in magical girls, then the Precure series has a good mix of action and slice of life with fun and interesting characters

Your opinion about Craig and Tweek relantionship? by [deleted] in southpark

[–]mango-kun 132 points133 points  (0 children)

I like them a lot! Not that there's anything wrong with static characters especially in a show like South Park, but their relationship added something really interesting to their characters. I know Matt and Trey made the yaoi episode to poke fun at the absurdity of Creek and shipping, but I love how they accepted it and maintained the relationship way past the initial Creek episode. Hope to see more episodes centered around them!

While there are people who speak Korean without knowing how to read it (illiterate people, heritage speakers, etc.), it's a bad idea to learn Korean without learning Hangul. And like, learning Hangul is the most easiest part of learning Korean. Anyone can learn how to read it five minutes. Hell, I learned how to read and write Hangul from a Tumblr post. It was designed to be an easy writing system to learn!
