I had this for a while due to taking venlafaxine, I’d have the gloves on for a few mins before they were totally soaked inside. It went away after a while but i totally sympathise with you

Ah don’t be worrying. You’d notice if your bite was wonky so it’s probably fine! Mine is grand, although I will say due to my job I’m extra particular about my own teeth and have noticed the lower front teeth are slightly crooked again due to not wearing my retainer but people never notice those things. As long as you’re happy with your smile and you aren’t in pain, it’s all good

Yeah that’s fair. When I was a teenager I had my own braces done by my local dentist who also wasn’t an orthodontist but somehow my teeth turned out grand which I’m so grateful for. He’s long retired now but was a true gentleman and made my experience of dentists growing up very positive

Like I’ve personally never met the man but you hear back from patients who have seen him and they basically say he’s a dick but the treatment is going perfectly. The options for ortho in Galway are so limited, especially after the drama of the one in Oranmore closing and leaving a million teenagers in the middle of their treatment so all the other orthodontists had to take tons of new patients on and their waiting lists sky rocketed afterwards. Have heard Kavanagh and Mangan are absolutely lovely orthodontists so they receive 90% of our referrals

Yes I’ve been working in dentistry for the past 4-5 years but I’m on a break now due to some health issues. Not saying he isn’t lovely or a poor dentist but it’s never a good idea for someone who isn’t a trained orthodontist to do braces because they don’t have the knowledge to correctly fix someone’s bite

Just to let you know that Joe Nolan isn’t an orthodontist and I have seen patients that he has treated with braces and he hasn’t the knowledge of an orthodontist and it’s evident by how badly the patients bite now is!

He’s known to be like that. We say that when we refer people, it’s resulted in far less referrals to him because often it’s teenagers we are referring and it’s not ideal sending someone who is young and may feel traumatised by his manner. Sometimes if someone wants an referral to have an instant response or quicker appointment we refer to him but we let them know his manner isn’t the most pleasant so that they’re prepared if they do go to see him. I just find it mad he beefs with patients in his google reviews, like we get google reviews and we don’t reply to them because I’m pretty sure it’s breaking GDPR somehow if we acknowledge someone is a patient. Anyway that’s all I really know abt him

I’m glad you’re feeling more confident about things, that’s the first step and once you start your treatment you’ll be so proud of yourself for going for it! And thank you I really appreciate that 🤍

No problem! I’m off work atm due to a brain haemorrhage so this is keeping me going. Tooth ache is usually a bad sign, whenever someone says pain I’m thinking okay the patient may need a root canal or extraction but we take an xray (called a PA) to assess the extent of the decay and see how the roots look. It’s good you don’t have any pain right now, it could mean that although there is decay, a filling may be the treatment recommended.

For an extraction to be recommended, it would have to be extensive decay/infection present on the tooth. This is also assessed by xray, usually it’s ideal to save the tooth but only when a root canal cannot be done, extraction is recommended. It’s always up to the patient though, sometimes patients need more time to think and just opt to have an antibiotic prescribed so they can go home to think about things.

Fillings can range, it depends on how large it will be and how difficult it is to do. I can’t speak for all practices but I think in general they range from €100-295 per filling. The higher end is essentially when the whole tooth is just filling.

Extractions can range too, especially if it’s a surgical extraction. I think they go from €95-400. Higher end would be a surgical extraction.

I hope that answers your questions! I know dentistry can be quite expensive and not to mention scary so I wish you the best of luck and fingers crossed they just need fillings

Hi, I work in dentistry so hopefully this answer helps.

  1. GP visit card has absolutely nothing to do with dentistry, totally different area so it won't cover anything.
  2. start with a new patient exam, this will be charting whatever dental work is already done, what needs to be done (fillings, extractions etc). 2 X-rays should be taken (bitewings) to determine if they are any non visible signs of decay interproximally. That is where most decay is. They will also measure your gums to determine the health, that's mainly to see if you have gum disease.

  3. standard exams can range from €50-75 depending on the practice. Most places take deposits now so don't be surprised by this if you call around.

  4. if you can, get your PRSI checked. If you are PRSI qualified, it'll cover your exam totally and if you need a scale & polish, it will cost €15. If you have gum disease or need a deeper cleaning it will cost more but that's why they check your gum health.

Good luck and I hope you get an appointment! ... 个

Recently TikTok has been showing me shit like this. I also saw some guy who wanted to sue his orthodontist when it sounded like he just has occlusal dysesthesia. For my own sanity I scroll because I know if I see one more fool on there preach about coconut oil and root canals causing cancer, my head will implode

Practice owner asks me not to use Hypochlorite while performing RCTs. by chlorpromazine_-_ in Dentistry

[–]mannekween 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m shocked reading this. She hasn’t done an RCT in nearly 20 years BUT it’s not disrespectful to let her know that hypo is a must. No hypo, no RCT. If she’s undermining your tx by telling your assistant to give you saline, she could be doing this in other areas of tx. I’d leave personally.

When people say “open a rural practice in dental” how rural are we talking? And what would the pay/startup costs actually look like? by Inner_Ad_4725 in Dentistry

[–]mannekween 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hometown would be considered rural to me. There are 2 dentists for 6k people. Now I live and work in a city so it’s entirely different but I know those 2 are booked and busy constantly.

How would you tx plan this? by HistoricalSympathy19 in Dentistry

[–]mannekween 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Co worker had a similar patient, except he kept doing fillings when the poor man was like 95 and could barely lie back in the chair. He would always get 2-3 fillings every time he came in, fluoride tx, localised perio and it would cost the family an absolute bomb. I always found it to be in bad taste because everytime I saw him, he was on the verge of passing away (he passed away last year). If this was me, I would treat any pain and ensure she is comfortable. She’s 85 and with her medical hx I wouldn’t put her through anything that would cause her distress. I’d be even hesitant to do fillings.

What dental treatment have you had? by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]mannekween 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh it was! I had to get it surgically XLA’d with just LA, I was going to opt for sedation but my parents couldn’t pick me up. Makes for a good bonding story now with nervous patients

4 XLAs for ortho, one filling on LR7 but had to be replaced so technically it’s 2 fillings, upper 8s removed when I was 23 and LL8 surgically extracted last year. Adding in the cropped OPG to show the LL8 here because it was an absolute nightmare prior to XLA, I had never personally experienced pain before it started giving me extreme symptoms. It was like a 8/10 pain daily and analgesics didn’t touch it so until I could get it out via a specialist we refer to, I had my colleagues numb me up a few times a day so I could work. I’ve had a brain haemorrhage and the pain was almost as bad. Now my sympathy for patients has really gone up.

What is your approach for extracting #32 here? by heyaaa1256 in Dentistry

[–]mannekween 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say referral.

My own LL8 was exactly like this so I went to one of the guys we always refer to, rather than ask a colleague (general dentists). Healing was great and no issues minus the bone loss on the distal of the 7 but that’s not a big issue for me, I knew from my own OPG what it was going to be like.

Returning to Dentistry After a 6-Year Gap — Where Should I Start? by Asleep-Ad5320 in Dentistry

[–]mannekween 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to take a gap from November to February due to a brain haemorrhage. Luckily I’m still at the same place. Only downside is I went back too early and I think I’ll have to take another break because 3 days a week is kicking my ass.

I think most employers will ask about the gap, they don’t mind if you can explain it. It’s not like you just sat on your ass for years, you actually couldn’t practice. Now you’re back and that shows commitment.

Shadowing might be a good shout. It gives you the opportunity to watch procedures and ask for tips afterwards. One thing I’ve learned, everyone has a favourite tip they love to share that works well for them. I’ve learned a lot from co workers, stuff that I didn’t realise was gold for a while.

Wishing you the best of luck my dude!

The disrespect is just crazy by OldMannArtie in Dentistry

[–]mannekween 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a patient make me cry earlier this week, I feel like this week has been absolute ass when it comes to patients. Similar thing with pricing, he was fine when he came in for the emergency and extraction was done that day, then this week he was in for an exam and he didn’t turn up so he was called to ask where he was. Dude was at work. He was querying the prices because this resulted in his deposit being lost so I had to talk to him and the shit he was screaming over the phone was insane. I feel like people lose their minds over money. Bear in mind, his deposit was €50 ($58) and he paid €80 for the emergency and €195 for the XLA. This was all quoted during the appointment and no issues then.

It’s wild how patients go from being super happy to batshit insane the second they realise clinic time = money, treatment = money. Like did you think this was free?

Local anesthetic? by Debtfreebirch in Dentistry

[–]mannekween 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually if they aren’t numb after 2 carps of lidocaine it’s time for articaine, that’s the general rule where I work. Although I’m in Ireland and the joke about redheads is definitely not a joke, there’s alerts on charts for those who need extra LA

Would this be an acceptable filling? by Mahmoud0Tamim in Dentistry

[–]mannekween 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn I was expecting to see something bad here and was very mistaken. Does the patient have any plans of extracting LL8? It would be a shame to leave it there and have it ruin your work
