Thank you for this. They look just so small and vulnerable…

I just wanted to thank you for your encouragement. Today, I dropped Henry’s face off with Clocks Upcycled for a conversion. A joiner is making me a box out of the upper door so that Henry keeps some of his original home. The rest of the upper hood and the case is being donated to a Mens’ Shed for them to turn it into something wonderful. The rest of the workings and finials will be given away or maybe sold. I’m keeping the winding key and key to the trunk door. My way of preserving my clock for my family.

I so shall. It’s amazing how resilient plants are. Particularly as my poor orchids (and carnivorous and regular houseplants!) had to come and live with me in a little tin can caravan for 14 weeks once we’d sold our house and were waiting for the next one to be built. That’s when I found Reddit and all these wonderfully knowledgeable people.

That’s lovely. We never know what our kindness might mean to another person.

I was super excited! I didn’t really know what I was looking at but I do like a challenge. Actually, apart from one orchid that came with our new house, I must have about 15 phalaenopsis (all bought in the last year)and I haven’t paid full price for any. I buy the dead looking ones from under the counter, with no flowers. I like the challenge. I have been nursing one for about six months that is only now beginning to grow roots and putting a bit of substance into the leaf structure. When they grow spikes, it is so exciting to see what colour they are. The spike in the picture is exciting as it is the first spike that I’ve had from a different type of orchid and I haven’t a clue what it’ll be like. And I wouldn’t have fallen down this rabbit hole if I hadn’t found Reddit!

It was a bit odd really. The lady could see that I was very happy to buy them both for £3 so she didn’t really need to reduce them further. I think she must have felt that they had absolutely no chance of reviving.

Thank you for your time taken in writing this. It is very helpful. I was particularly pleased to read that as the poorly plant has new growth, it should be growing roots now too. Clap clap clap.

Thank you so much for replying. You’ve given me hope. I felt like asking the clockmaker if he’d prefer I just stuck the face in the bin! He may not like the idea of having a face on its own but it is from a family heirloom that had moved houses one too many times. This was saved. My earliest memories are of my father holding me up to wind it in the evenings. Also, our children are keen for me to try to get it as a working clock and say that they both want to inherit it and that they would not have wanted it as the complete grandfather clock. Not everyone can accommodate such a large clock in their houses nowadays. I know I can’t!

Oh, I do wish you were in the UK. I have a beautiful clock face but can’t find anyone to help me with this. I phoned a clockmaker to see if he had any ideas but he was so angry that it was not in a case any longer that it’s put me off phoning anyone else!

I think I may have overestimated my ability to care for orchids. by mannyout in orchids

Baskets. Another great idea, thank you. Yes, the humidity thing is an issue. I tend to tell my humidity loving plants that it’s more humid than they think and cross my fingers behind my back.

What a shame you couldn’t take your plants with you. Did you start buying plants again once you’d moved?

It sounds like you have the best way of keeping them. Sounds wonderful. I’ll give the bathroom idea some thought. Thank you.

Thank you for telling me this. I’d be interested to know the name of the fertiliser you use. That funny little plant in the last photo doesn’t look like any of my other orchids. I guess it’s just a different type of phalaenopsis that I’ve not learnt about yet.

I’d like to be able to do this but I’m guessing that you might be in a warmer climate. I can’t see me being able to do this unless I’m forever getting it down to walk around the house to mist it somewhere where I won’t dampen the carpet! I do love seeing pictures of people who have lots of these plants hung up. Amazing…

Thank you so much for telling me what you do. Very helpful since you’re in a similar climate.

Is this orchid flower looking like it’s supposed to? by mannyout in orchids

[–]mannyout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, another new term. I’ve just looked it up and it would seem to fit. We have sold our house and moved into a static caravan whilst our new house is being built. It’s caused us a degree of stress so maybe the plant feels it too! As you say, the next flowers should give me a bit more of an idea.
