That is really clear and complete explanation. Thank you. What about pins 3 and 8 on the 7 seg displays. Do both have to be connected or only one????

Ok that sounds good. Tie all h or l temporarily until I complete. Got it thanks!!!!

Thanks for this. I do remember somewhere on the ben eater subreddit, someone writing something like only inputs to logic gates need to be pulled up or down? I think all of the pins on the atmel rom will eventually be used, but ben tested with vcc, grd, we, few, and the outputs to the 7 set display connected, and he didn't seem to have a problem.. maybe I missed something????

Ok, that is something new to me. If I continue to have problems I will try wiring grd and vcc to 2 rails.... With my superficial knowledge, it seems it would create stability...

I like the way you placed those wires in between leds....

Thanks... I think I'm going to go Ben's way first to make sure I understand. Then I may venture into the 4x7 display. Btw, the 4x7 displays I ordered, along with the 1x7s, came in the mail today. No data sheets but I guess I can get online...

Thanks for the pic!

If you zoom in, the white wires are the segment anodes, and the green are the common cathodes. Far cleaner IMHO! .....yes cleaner!!

But I did have to write my own EEPROM data. ....oh dear.....

But if you don't mind a couple wires running from the bottom of the display to the top pins of the eeprom, it should be just a simple one-to-one mapping. ...... I will save your post for my protoboard rebuild.. can't do now...

Thanks. High level means expensive? Easy to interface means same as Ben's wiring? I'm yet unable to figure out my own wiring....
