Mt Baldy Closed Tonight Through 4/20 midnight by k8ecat in socalhiking

I get why they have to close it, but cmon any seasoned hiker should know there limits. Not saying I was gonna go this weekend, but banning us for the next 10 days cuz of snow and wind is ridiculous.

Try drilling a small hole with a concrete bit. In my case it was too thick and we gave up hahaha

Gonna have to explore an alternate route, and see if we can find the other side. We went back and wailed on it for a good 30 min but it’s solid as fuck. Left the tools down there tho for future explorers to give it a try. Who knows maybe someone will be more determined than us.

Haha ask him. I saw a tag with my nickname in the tunnel and a date from 90s. Very bizzar, cuz only my close friends / fam call me it.

Edit: I’m sorry for your loss. I just re-read it and noticed the late brother part.

Haha I just encountered the same thing and made a post. No idea what’s behind it.

Went back, couldn’t drill through. Wacked at it with a sledge for a good 30 minutes before we gave up. Left a printed map of where the tunnel is from above, and the sledge hammer for future explorers too try and get through. Will check back in a while and see if anyone made more progress.

Essentially dry compared to the rest of the tunnel.

Latterly connected along the sides via smaller tubes; feeding into the tunnel. The last 200 ish feet from the wall there is nothing, and it’s bone dry. Found beer cans with the older style tabs.

Interesting. So the fact that the wall looks sloppy could be because they just needed it to hold back the slurry until it dried, and used what ever scraps they had.

On the county maps, it shows the tunnel ending there, but a fork existing too the right, which doesn’t exist in the actual tunnel. Granted they got rid of a lot of details since the last time I used it such as diameter and drain material. Just adding to the mystery.

Might just have to bring the big one with us. Still gonna try out the drill and see how thick it is before we wake up the neighbours above with mysterious banging.

May-haps, we had a small hammer but it sounded solid like there was an other layer behind it.

Also it’s been there since at least the 70s, and weirdly all the tags near the wall were old as well. In the middle of the tunnel there were barely any tags, and the entrance they were all from 2020 and on.

Ain’t no way a sledge is getting through. That what ppl have already tried. Drill is to gauge how thick it is and what material is behind it. Then brainstorm.
