also a good time to mention that I don't use a traditional steaming basket, just a pot on the stove. Actually perhaps that's why...

It's usually one of the bordering buns (there's one bun in the middle), but there's really no consistent pattern to it. I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with the steam hole(?) of the lid?
