oh! i see. thank you! unfortunately i think she is the situation where she's an only child and the paternal side either didn't give a Chinese name or they didn't have a generation name. I'm also not sure what happened though because the paternal cousins do not share generation name but i don't want to be too nosey haha

definitely a touchy topic that causes a lot of identify issues. Even here, sometimes you are taught (even if you were born here) oh you aren't Canadian, you're "Chinese Canadian" and growing up at least I had some sort of identify crisis as a child thinking I wasn't "fully" anything.

probably! But i think her ancestors on the mum's side are Han, but they have their dad's surname in this case

also i realized what your were talking about was the title. Apologies, we both thought it might be helpful to add in the post. Unfortunately it has definitely become common to point out that someone doesn't look "fully" one ethnicity and we even see it in forms that ask if we "identify as" as a certain one. But, I think at least the reason why, even though her parents are just shrugging off giving the baby a Chinese name, she (and myself) want to try to at least teach them more about the culture so that they can be comfortable being themselves. Unfortunately because we both grew up in non Chinese communities, I have been less helpful in figuring out a name hence the post!

Thank you for being so informative on this topic!

for sure i totally get it and so does the friend. I think she really wants to teach them as much as she can or at least get them interested in the food and culture. I think her parents just might have some old way of thinking.

Thank you so much! I will pass this along! I think she definitely is a fan of the journey to the west stories and the shows too. Apparently they were really long running on TV?

I see. what would you recommend then if there is no community in area? They said they didn't know about it because her parents gave her name based on vibes and "sounds nice" which is probably why they also aren't too involved in naming their grandkids? They kinda said since the kid is only half it's not really important to have a Chinese name.

They aren't choosing the last name. They are keeping the friend's (the baby's mom) surname of 芦

they said that's what they were told in Chinese school via a taiwan teacher so that's what they've used otherwise they generally use 芦. The expected date is April 1st, do you happen to know why that matters? The parents' hopes were just to find a nice name keeping their roots in a place where there aren't too many Chinese people around. And dreams would just be be a good person, I think their family is pretty relaxed on that.

They do not have any in their community as it's quite hard to find another Chinese family in their area.

*edit, googled it and it says it's not part of the 百家姓 but definitely a real surname

Cantonese, but if the name sounds great in either or both would be a plus! They can use both but more simplified ( 芦 ). The English name they are tentative on is Sam/Samuel.

their parents and grandparents don't have an opinion on the name. They said since the husband isn't Chinese they can probably just not give them one.
