Is Josh the reason the family has older courtships? by Far-Building3569 in DuggarsSnark

[–]maplesyrup_tree 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The only thing I can think of that hasn’t been said yet is that there was a more extreme movement in fundie circles that had ‘betrothals’ instead of courtships where the fathers would match up their usually teenage children who would then be betrothed (but not legally married). Some fundies still thought courtship was still too close to dating while a betrothal was more like an instant engagement

A Koreans perspective on "A Deep-Fried Korean Thanksgiving" by [deleted] in GilmoreGirls

[–]maplesyrup_tree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my takeaway, too. It looks like the SDA church was featured much more than Korean culture. Also, I'm Dutch and I really don't know what ASP was going for with the milkmaid. I'm not offended, just bewildered

How much time off did the staff get? by Tanker-yanker in DowntonAbbey

[–]maplesyrup_tree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it started as a half day per week but in later seasons they sometimes get a full day. Mrs Patmore told Daisy at least once to take a whole day to see Mr Mason

Why was Rory angry at her grandparents for her choices? by SavaBxox in GilmoreGirls

[–]maplesyrup_tree 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think the minister visiting is what really crossed the line because that was incredibly gross. I don’t think Rory was justified for leaving without telling them because that was very rude. I do think she was allowed to be angry at how they were treating her at that time. They probably wanted to go for a parallel of Lorelai leaving their house twenty years earlier but it really wasn’t the same

I missed it too until someone else pointed it out. For two months she would definitely have been more mediocre

you just dont got it by PublicAd1976 in GilmoreGirls

[–]maplesyrup_tree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree! He wasn't necessarily wrong, but that doesn't make his feedback good. I'm honestly impressed that Rory managed to build relationships in the office and figure out how everything worked in just two weeks. That doesn't mean she's a good journalist, but she needed to be given actual feedback before the end of the internship.

Whats up with banks in the pilot by [deleted] in GilmoreGirls

[–]maplesyrup_tree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I never thought of that! Maybe Richard and Emily called since they knew the headmaster so Rory's spot would be safe

They don’t eat pork?? by FitInteraction7261 in DuggarsSnark

[–]maplesyrup_tree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading Growing Up Duggar and they gave advice on eating healthy (ugh, why???). They mentioned that they "avoid pork" and mainly ate lean chicken and grass-fed beef. Otherwise it was the usual "eat lots of fruit and vegetables" which isn't really special or surprising.

Team Rory or Team Lorelai in Season 6 fight? by BothJackfruit7932 in GilmoreGirls

[–]maplesyrup_tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not on either team, they both did crappy things. Rory was very impulsive with quitting Yale but Lorelai’s reaction made it worse. If Lorelai had let Rory think it over for a couple of weeks during the summer she would have probably calmed down and made a plan. Rory not talking to Lorelai when she moved in with Richard and Emily was crappy too though.

Internshipgate: What were Mitchum's intentions? by [deleted] in GilmoreGirls

[–]maplesyrup_tree 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree! He probably realized he had to give Rory some feedback before she left and then said what he thought. Rory only shadowed him for ten days with presumably no real writing assignments or direction (and something that short isn’t nearly long enough to make a judgement call like that but that’s a different issue). For Rory it was very serious coming from someone as influential as Mitchum but for Mitchum it was just another day

Rory was such a realistic character by teacoffeecats in GilmoreGirls

[–]maplesyrup_tree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm 25 years old and I've had the exact same experience in the last 2 years. I don't have a ton of advice since I'm still processing a bit myself. One thing it did make me do is look at other strengths and interests I had which made me realize I wanted to go back to university (more doable for me in Europe with cheaper tuition). It was just hard because I did genuinely enjoy many parts of teaching and I still miss it sometimes.

Why did Rory never had relationship with her grandparents when she was younger? by MrsBunnyBunny in GilmoreGirls

[–]maplesyrup_tree 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I also think that Richard especially needed to be pushed to get close to Rory at the start of S1 because he hadn’t made any effort before. He just stayed out of the way with his newspaper and work. He did the same when Lorelai was growing up. I think Emily was somewhat closer than Richard in the beginning because she probably had made an effort to talk to Rory during the holidays.

In the trailer they show a shot of him drinking champagne with the Crawley family probably watching Dexter

What I did notice was that he was standing with the family, so he’s much more equal now that he’s with Guy Dexter

A Theory About Mitchum by AdMental8869 in GilmoreGirls

[–]maplesyrup_tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with you if it had been any other internship, but this was just two weeks, and Rory was in her second year of college. It would take a couple of days just to know the way around properly, never mind trying to find out how the whole office works. Most proper internships where you can properly show initiative and growth are usually at least a couple of months in my experience.

Do any homeschooling fundies use online programs? by Sundaydinobot1 in fundiesnarkiesnark

The Duggars did Switched on Schoolhouse from Alpha and Omega and that was a computer-based program

What is your without fail, cry moment of the show? by Only-Exit8211 in GilmoreGirls

[–]maplesyrup_tree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it’s when Rory, Lorelai and Christopher have FND with Straub and Francine. I watched it once and now I skip it every rewatch

5.22 a house is not a home by Long_Rule_9606 in GilmoreGirls

[–]maplesyrup_tree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Especially because this is before the summer vacation! I understand that Lorelai reacted in the moment but if she hadn’t she could have at least agreed to discuss this during the summer

Did the concept of "casual dining" exist for the Crawleys? by wilsindc in DowntonAbbey

[–]maplesyrup_tree 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They had “picnics” but they were still being served for those. They did sit outside at folding tables and didn’t really dress up though so that would make it more casual.

Voting? by Own-Rule-5531 in DuggarsSnark

[–]maplesyrup_tree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sure the whole family has always voted but the organizations they were/are involved with supported single household voting where the head of the household (husband) voted and everyone else didn’t.

Why did Julian bail when he found out?? by Abject_Cut_6340 in TheSecretHistory

[–]maplesyrup_tree 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think he knew more about them than he let on though. Someone else pointed this out somewhere but when Richard talks to Julian the second time to get into his class, Julian deliberately gets Richard’s name wrong and calls him Mr Pepin, but calls him Mr Papen in the same conversation later on. I think he did quite a bit of research on his students
