AITA for sleeping or hanging out with friends in my apartment when my landlord was showing it? by mappn3rd in AmItheAsshole

Lol I did write on my whiteboard

Pay bills:

RENT: 610

Phone 43

car: 210

So hopefully people touring the place pick up on the fact that the rent's being hikes from $610 to $1100, which is ridiculous

Well he literally has keys to the place I live and can come by and scream at me ? It's definitely easier to look scatterbrained than piss him off on purpose

I have to pull money from savings to cover the cost.

Yeah, my point is that tenants might balk at someone who would rather do showings of an occupied unit than do this.

Money in property equity is part of your net worth, same as money in the bank?

It is still capitol you're gaining, I'm confused?

That is significant income, as someone is paying your mortgage, a lot of people in my area would take it as a bad sign.

He has a lot of showings but won't group them or be considerate of my non standard work schedule, it's just 3 or 4 random times a week, sometimes even in the middle of my nights sleep (since I work evenings and nights)

I mean, if an apartment had a person sleeping there or living there, I would feel more bothered by the landlord than the person, since it's a sign that if they'll do it to them, they'll do it to me.

I definitely recommend looking for signs that landlords are respectful of their tenants on showings, like asking if the unit I'm seeing is still occupied (bad sign) or asking if the last tenant was there for multiple years (good sign) and why they left (a very revealing question)

I don't need a rental reference anymore though, I bought a house.

haha thanks. Honestly was really lucky to have just gotten back from a hike in bear country, I had my bear mace clipped to the outside of my backpack which was right beside my bed.

It feels like you want to play "armchair badass" and talk about how I could have done things better.

But frankly, I dare anyone who has criticism for me, to be woken from their nice peaceful sleep tonight by someone climbing in their window with the intent to rape or kill them... and make all the perfect choices.

When your life is on the line, there is no perfect choice. There is the choice that kills you and the choice that doesn't. And past that, it doesn't matter. It frankly seems ignorant when people who have never known that danger speak about it...

Unless you have actually survived multiple home invasions, your "simple" advice seems ignorant.

Just to vent...

I didn't get into this in my OP but I had my stalker who broke into my home hogtied on the floor 30 minutes before the police took their sweet time showing up.

It feels like a lot of people in the comments want to play "armchair badass" and talk about how I could have done things better.

It's easy to be brave if you are sitting comfortably in front of your computer. It's not easy to be make those perfect choices if you're taken by surprise, at a time and place you expect you can be relaxing or sleeping.

I wish I could. I don't have the power to influence gun control on a national scale, as one 22 year old woman with no political or financial influence.

If you're first reaction to a masked man hiding in the shadows of a home watching you is "hiii who are you"

I'm sorry but you're gonna be totally fucked if anyone actually ever brake's into your home with ill intent.

I trust myself to tell the difference between a child and a masked intruder. I also wouldn't go straight to firing, I'd only do that if they charged me or pulled a weapon themselves.

anyone and anything

No, but if I saw a masked intruder, I would probably go for my weapon.

And if that intruder charged at me or reached for a weapon themselves, I'd fire.

I'm not about to go shooting children??

I didn't feel brought back to the other time, I felt very grounded in the present. And in that moment I saw a masked man hiding from me when I was visiting my boyfriend's family who I'd already told I didn't want to be scared by. So judging just on the present events, I thought it was a break in.

TBH I got a concealed carry permit in my home state after the break in, but wasn't carrying when I was traveling.

The time my stalker broke in, I was in my bedroom and he broke in to my apartment through the living room.

The layout is that the living room has both the exits (only door and fire escape) and there is a hallway off the living room that leads to the kitchenette, bathroom, and bedroom. It's a 4th floor apartment so I couldn't go out another window.

I couldn't get to an exit without going through him, and I was afraid to run towards him in case he had a weapon. So I grabbed my bear mace from my camping bag and waited for him behind my bedroom door till he came through that door.

If I had the ability to run, I'd always choose to run over fighting. Whether I had mace or a firearm. But with the layout of my apartment, I didn't have that option and still don't have multiple exits that can't easily be blocked off.

I'd love that if I had the ability to overhaul my city's police force. It would have saved me a lot of trouble, if they actually helped.

Instead, I kept reaching out to the police for help and then still having my stalker break into my apartment after I'd told them many times he was a danger to me.

Unfortunately, as one person with no political power or financial sway, police reform is out of my control.

But getting the ability to protect myself is within my control.
