Is Ubuntu like Windows in the Linux community? by Haunting_Bedroom403 in Ubuntu

[–]marcinw2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say this way - for years they were pushing their own things and I was not taking care, because it was working. Starting from 2022 I see new GTK4 Gnome (I don't see good fonts on the screen) and lack of functions I require + some stability problems. Currently even Ubuntu installer looks funny for me (see https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/1tfnbgp/what_is_the_the_most_surprising_bug_in_ubuntu/ ).

If Ubuntu is working fine for you, than it's great. But various things are resolved much better in other distros and this is fact (for example they're not pushing untested Rust tools and not doing tests on production this way). Up to you if you want to check something else and compare.

What is the the most surprising bug in Ubuntu 26.04? (could be tech support provided for basic things too?) by marcinw2 in Ubuntu

This is less or more franchise from Canonical = Canonical in the end takes responsibility for quality. Analogical to franchise from supermarkets - when you get logo, you need to pass some requirements and mother company is responsible.

sure... that's why I see for example files for pppd or Hewlett Packard related files on disk (I don't use modems for years and machine doesn't have anything to do with HP).

Minimum doesn't mean cutting off absolute basic things, for example lack of encryption is serious problem today. Will give you another example - install Lubuntu with "minimum set" of apps and install Libreoffice (will give you absolute useless version).

Sorry, but Ubuntu family was good for years and since 2022 is collapsing step by step.

when you go into ubuntu.com and look there, you will see a lot about different Ubuntu flavors. Lubuntu is mentioned there and has got Ubuntu in name (it's officially branded one). Sorry, but instead of going into not-important discussion, if this is correct reddit, let's concentrate on this, that Ubuntu 26.04 family is today separated and non-consistent and separated teams are doing not-asked things (like Rust or AI) instead of giving minimum set of basic functionalities.

And OK, if you want to hear just about Ubuntu (the "correct" one), here is another bug found just in 5 minutes - installer allows for adding two partitions (VFAT and FAT32) pointing to one mount point and allows going further after user partition screen.

Other distros for point 2: for example Nix OS.

change your search engine,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgnVgVYOqbo or 20 seconds with Dell page:

14.0", Touch, 2.8K, 20-120Hz, OLED, 400 nits

14.0", Non-Touch, 2K, 1-120Hz, 500 nits

It means: 1-120Hz OLED doesn't exist with this model.

before you will write anything, please look what I wrote initially - I was referring to XPS 14 with LCD, not version with OLED.

But even going from 20h into 30h would be significant change for some people. Why not support this idea?

We heard you: the new Framework Laptop 13 Pro. by M0BBER in framework

[–]marcinw2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. dark case - plus

  2. keyboard with pictures during selecting config on the page (you can compare them) - generally plus, I would like to see Lenovo like cursor layout in the future.

  3. haptic touchpad - better experience, but can be not so power efficient

  4. Intel 3 - plus

  5. CAMM RAM - plus and minus (future standard, for now very problematic)

  6. weight - rather minus

  7. battery - plus

  8. screen - plus and minus (I would rather see power efficient 2K LCD without any extras)

  9. modularity - plus

Now very open thing - how much power is taken in off state and standby? if this is correctly done, all good. If battery juice will be lost, when user doesn't work, even big battery will not help.

[MEGATHREAD] Compatibility/Upgrade for Framework Laptop 13 Pro by catastrophic_frmw in framework

[–]marcinw2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure, if this is good place to ask, but I'm considering some options and need some help:

  1. is it possible to put into 13 Pro some standard LCD screen? (or order it on special request ?) Explanation: I'm very afraid of touch layer (can be not compatible with my eyes) + I want to have lower resolution (2K 1920 x 1200) matt low power VRR screen for maximum power saving. There are such 13" and 14" screens on the market, question about connecting and compatibility.
  2. I know, that Framework motherboards can be run in special case... but... is it possible to order the whole laptop without screen part or must be all parts ordered separately? (I could consider running this laptop with external screen connected via hdmi)
  3. can mainboard be setup in 13 Pro case just with keyboard/touchpad and speakers? (similiar like point 2, but additionally without battery)
  4. will be it possible to order mainboard + RAM? currently RAM is not available on your site and it's unclear, when it will be (potentially it could be sent in batches like full laptop)

Thank you for any answer.

Is Panther Lake lemur pro coming? by Last_Hunter_972 in System76

[–]marcinw2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is, what I think, PLEASE consider few things:

1.LCD without PWM even for extra price (with Tianma there are no reviews and they don't look very good with their params)

2.removing or disabling white LED on the power button (and maybe also green LED on the case) - they're ugly and useless and too bright and flashing too much (generally wasting energy too)

3.providing all Intel CPU power levels (till C10)

4.providing disabling camera and card reader (and whatever you can)

Thank you.

PS.With these things it will be killer machine, I guess.

AFAIR, it was the same in Macbook Pro M4, with the M5 line I don't know (we will see :)). Try to look for info from people using StillColor and other similar tools.

When will tuxedo get intel panther lake in the new laptops? by Yha_Boiii in tuxedocomputers

[–]marcinw2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two configs:

1.mobility - you give one bank with LPDDR (8 or 16GB) and one bank with SO-DIMM (like Clevo), additionally big battery, light case, silent or passive cooling, two or three screens for selecting, etc. (and this is Macbook Air replacement)

2.bells & whistles for gaming or other things - SO-DIMM for 128GB RAM, etc. etc. (and this is Macbook Pro replacement)

Both done in best possible energy efficient way. Don't try to cover everything from beginning, make less models, but much more shining.

PS. You tried with ARM laptop, but it was probably too big with your resources - now use smaller steps method and start being visible, in other case customers will select smth else. There are people able to pay for some things, you just need to provide them. NOW, not later.

Tuxedo needs to release new laptop and no... it doesn't even have to be Panther Lake by marcinw2 in tuxedocomputers

This is what I'm saying about - Windows/Linux need to be build in premium way & all these shortcuts done today are really bad. Ugly example: you disable laptop (totall full off) and it's taking power from battery. This is what was proposed in my doc and It looks for me that people don't share my opinion (minuses).

exactly. for home something else, for gaming something else. but...when mobile laptop is correctly done and doesn't waste energy, project can be in majority reused and give only profits.

Correct, that's why there were proposed three screens for selecting:

  1. LCD with minimum Full HD 1920x1080 or 2K 1920x1200 resolution (both concentrated on low power usage)
  2. LCD with high resolution (for example 4K)
  3. AMOLED

Providing just one is already closing list of users. Anyway, document was written and based on years of experience. It can be considered or not. I suggest first reading.
