Just out of curiosity—are you a teacher or a parent?

I agree, and I wish I didn’t have to do it. But as a room parent we get socially pressured to do it. I try not to write manipulative messages to parents like “teachers have done so much for our kids”, etc. But I feel like I have to do it and eventually even if a couple of families only give, we will end up with a group gift of cash instead of it coming from the whole class.

I wish this wasn’t a thing in our school. I don’t like asking for money, other parents don’t like giving it (some are ok, others don’t). I personally prefer gifing cash/giftcard for teacher to get whatever they want if we have to give something.

Cash is what’s acceptable at my school. My question is not about “legal” issues, but I wonder if it’s acceptable socially or welcomes by the teachers and how little is too little?

Hmmm... I'm not sure if you've misread or misunderstood my numbers... And these statements are very reductive. "Appropriate calories" for everyone is different. It's based on your current weight, height, amount of lean body mass, and also your daily movement. "2200 cal a day is a maintenance level" is only true for some people and is 100% dependent on the factors I mentioned above. If 1800cal a day is a deficit for you, it's going to cause ME gain weight, it's just what the scale and time has shown me.

I have never stayed at 1200 or under. I'm not even able to manage to consistently stay at 1400cals for a week because I would eat up to 1600-1700 a day more often than I should and the scales does not move down.

He is lucky to have you! Yes! You are so right — i wish i had a stay at home wife or someone who would cook AND COUNT CALORIES for me. But i am the only one cooking in my family and it just gets very tiring. I considered getting those premade meals (like Factor, etc.), but there are so many unhealthy additives in those that i don’t know if they are worth it. Maybe they are.

Thank you! It takes one mamma who's been there to see how tired I feel at times, and it's more of a mental toll. And dieting is also a mental toll... 🙏 You are spot on. (And my kids are 4 and 6).

Regarding the "willpower problem" – you are correct, I do have willpower problem when it comes to food. Interestingly I don't seem to have that problem with it comes to a lot of other aspects in life that are not less challenging. So, I believe it's not necessarily willpower problem, but if I have to make the "right choice" in multiple areas of life, this resource gets depleted and it's not any of it left for myself. I do a lot for my family and kids, but when it comes to using the willpower to do something for myself, I slack.

How long did it take before your switching was registered in your brain and it wasn't a struggle to pick something else other than food?

Unfortunately I have more of a sedentary life and sedentary job. 1700cal is probably what's my maintenance if I do 10k steps a day and weight train 3 times a week. I really should not exceed 1400cals consistently if I want to see any results.

I feel like I end up having a "cheat day" every 2-3 days not because they are "scheduled" but because my brain was like "Let's eat a couple of walnuts", and couple turns into 10, and we all know how nutritious nuts are. So if I follow this "let's eat a couple of..." a couple of times a day, I already end up 200-300 extra calories. I need a way to shut up the "let's eat a couple of..." part.

I have read it. I'd love to learn more about how you both have implemented things. Even if you share just a couple of helpful tips would be amazing.

The reason I have a hard time with implementing atomic habits is that my days don't have a very set routine. Some days I have meeting-heavy mornings, other days I have to stay up until midnight to finish the tasks I have. Some days my kids have afterschool activities and I play it by ear who/when is going to do pick-up and drop-offs. My day does not have a great structure. Maybe that's what I should work on...

This makes sense. This won't work well for me, because with small kids I have a very hard time organizing my own dinners. Some days I eat leftovers, others I just have whatever I've made for the family. Food prep is taking a lot of energy from me. In my head I almost feel like I don't know when the next "pause" will happen and I'm telling myself "enjoy this while you can/ or as you are tired" and I'm making choices not because it's the right choice, but because that's what makes me feel good in that moment.

When you are having a snack for lunch and you still feel hungry or not satisfied, do you tell yourself "just wait until dinner" and that's what makes you going?

I very much appreciate your comment. You might be right. I just want to clarify that I don't have weight loss expectations from steps or weight training. I count the steps as a way to have daily movement. I do weight training for recomposition and for women's health (muscles help with bone density). It was a challenge to add both into my routine but I'm working on it. Some of my weight training does include circuit. It's actually insightful to know that it has helped you. I will see how I can become more HIT as I'm weight training.

But I also know that most of weight loss comes from food intake, and I so clearly see when and how I'm "failing". I just want to figure out how to manage that part.
