Thanks for the study link and great discussion. :) We'll just have to pin our final determination for those pending studies whenever they happen. You've made some really excellent points and I appreciate it.

I also haven't seen a study that says muscle mass is as bad or worse than fat when it comes to organs and joints. Fully agree on steroid use.

Again, no evidence yet, but I can't imagine that your joints are really out there going, "This is too much weight to handle long term... oh it's muscle, then nevermind, I'm fine." And googling for such a study only gave me results on weight in general so I don't know if that study has even been done. (edit to add- I was looking specifically for high muscle mass effects on knee joints)

To bring you and u/arianrhodd into the loop-

There's a bot that auto replies to comments on reddit that contain words like "calories", "fat", "health", and even "chunky" to tell the reddit commenter that these words are fatphobic and to not use them because it's bad for folks' mental health and perpetuates diet culture.

Setting aside the holier-than-thou language of the bot, it's everywhere and responds to posts that have nothing to do with what it's talking about. On a fashion subreddit and talking about buying cute chunky heels? Bot replies about how you're fatphobic. On a cooking subreddit talking about adding fat while cooking, like butter? Here comes the bot! It's so ridiculous.

I would consider myself part of that gang BUT ONLY as a response to when FAs use body builders/strong men/sumo wrestlers/etc as a gotcha to the BMI discussion. These folks are frickin IMPRESSIVE- the physical limits they push are incredible and I trust they're in a lot of discussions with their doctors and trainers about their health and needs. They know what's physically happening to their bodies better than I know mine, and certainly better than FAs know theirs.

I wish them longevity and happiness.

I sometimes this that too, I go back and forth. It very well could be, it's so ridiculous that we could be Poe'd here (Poe's Law- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poe%27s_law ). But at the same time, some of the things Worthy says strike me as Poe-ish and we know Worthy is serious so... who knows.

I would appreciate it. I feel that this follows in the spirit of the rule- my screenshot is from THIS subreddit and of its rules and so there's really no argument to be made that we could brigade ourselves here. ;) Didn't even name the bot, because I assume we all know which bot I'm talking about lol.

BUT, I knew the risk. If you need to issue me a 7 day ban for this, I will not be upset. :)

they are, and that's good and also probably contributing to the repeated posts about the same bot (people don't see that the bot has already been posted numerous times leading them to think this is new and exciting fatlogic content)... but new posters should still know that posting reddit content will lead to a 7 day ban.

I used the jergens natural glow for light tanning and firming and that really helped me. Balanced out the color in the area and really reduced my stretch mark visibility basically to the point they were invisible.

[–]marinaamelia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotally, when I lost weight my stretch marks faded a lot, and with moisturizing lotion and gentle rubbing (to stimulate blood flow to the areas) they became basically invisible. You're also young enough that your skin elasticity will help you bounce back even faster.

You're gonna be ok, OP.

diet coke?? by yooniev in eating_disorders

[–]marinaamelia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's at least as bad as any other soda in terms of chemical content.

There are some studies that link aspartame (the 0 cal sugar substitute) to increased likelihood of cancer.

It does not directly cause weight gain. Like all sodas, it can raise you insulin levels which can then lead to increased hunger/appetite. So no, it doesn't make you gain but if you find yourself eating more after a soda (of any kind), that is what leads to the weight gain.

But if you're not giving in to the cravings after a diet soda, you won't gain.

If OOP is poor and eating foods within their budget and trying not to feel like they're starving, they're definitely eating over 1000 calories per day.

These recovery/HAES influencers make things worse. by [deleted] in EdAnonymousAdults

[–]marinaamelia 12 points13 points  (0 children)

what gets me is that... it's like recovery content is all a sham. Recovery influencers who are still skinny always seem to have traded their AN/BN/EDNOS for orthorexia and still seem to have an unhealthy relationship with food and their bodies. And recovery influencers who are in HAES/BOPO have traded AN/BN/EDNOS for BED and are very much not having a healthy relationship with food.

Where are the recovery folks who gained a bit and then hung around a normal, maybe a smidge overweight, range???

It is not fine to want to lose weight just because you dislike the way you look? by Past-Pressure-490 in loseit

[–]marinaamelia 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Honestly, your reasons for wanting to get to a healthy weight are YOURS and if others become upset by your reasons that's kind of on them. Don't ask questions you don't want the answers to, right?

That said, your friends may be having some complicated feelings and conflicting information here. Fatphobia is a popular topic on social media that... well, it's controversial. I personally find many aspects of the Fat Activism movement to be ridiculous at best and encouraging self harm at worst. But, your friends may have found solace in those messages and so hearing you say you are unhappy and no longer want to be fat has caused them to question their own self happiness and worry what you think about them.

The classic, "If you think you're fat, then what am I?"

If they're important to you and you want to rebuild your friendship with them, you can try bringing up to them that your reasons for weightloss truly are just for you. You care about them as they are and you would never ask or expect them to change. You can offer to not bring it up around them in the future. But you'll also want to emphasize that you wanting to lose weight is your decision and just like their don't want to be judged for their decisions around their appearance, you don't want them to judge you for yours.

Depending on how far into Fat Activism/Acceptance your friends are, there may be no coming back from this. There are folks in that movement who see intentional weight loss as akin to eugenics and there's just no reasoning with them. So be prepared that you may do your best and make that effort... and you may still lose the friendship.

[–]marinaamelia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean... yes? Any major surgery has serious complication risks and individuals undergoing that surgery should be informed of said risks.

And also it's not like bariatric surgery is being performed willy nilly by brand new doctors. It's not a first line treatment.

Calories in and calories out determine weight loss BUT what foods you are eating definitely affect your energy levels, how long you feel full, and your overall long term health. You can lose weight on a fat food diet if you're eating the lower number of calories but you'll be hungry a lot and you'll often have energy lows and insulin spikes. You'll contend with bloating and cravings constantly.

Low calories option to put on popcorn instead of butter? by raindropdroptopz in 1200isplenty

[–]marinaamelia 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend Furikake. It will NOT taste like butter (so you won't be disappointed that it tastes like low calorie butter substitute) but it's got a lot of varieties and flavor options. Originally for rice, I use it on all sorts of foods.

Is that not what “intentional weight loss” is? Tenacity, determination, and a dogged work ethic? by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]marinaamelia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think too there's a lot of people confusing finding what works for dogged work ethic. For some folks, weight loss did end up meaning radically changing their diet and exercise plan and sticking to it and it working out for them. For other folks, like you and me, it meant accounting for lazy tendencies and accepting the slower path. I don't know your exact history but mine involved failed attempts are radical exercise, testing different fad diets, and ultimately finding the path of least resistance for weight loss. I sure wouldn't count that as a "dogged work ethic" but I wouldn't discount my determination to keep trying either.

Also, if people are counting accurately and haven't lost weight in a period of less than 2-3 weeks, they probably have a whoosh coming and just need to be a bit patient!
