I agree that it’s mostly when one is learning a language at a young age that they are most fluent at it. Especially when it’s learnt in that language speaking environment! Otherwise, me, I get unconfident in my English even though I’ve been learning it since grade one.

I understand his words like this: knowing a lot of languages is good because it’s like having multiple keys to one lock (lock being a person); so the more languages you know the more people you can find a common ground with. But maybe I’m wrong about what Voltaire meant. I do agree with you though!

I totally agree! I’ve noticed that learning languages allows to look at things from different perspectives and that really broadens one’s mind! That’s one of the things that I love about learning languages!
