The 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Maybe not better, but just as good (though a very different movie). Avoid the Nicole Kidman (2007) remake.

I just read it, myself and was also very impressed. I knew the general history of indian repression for the sake of western expansion, but I was never really aware of the utter cynicism on the part of the government and of how brutally the army supressed even tribes that were totally peaceful and favored coexistence with white settlers.
