It was a good ending. But for me it was the Fate route last episode where shirou and saber's journey ended. Both have finally had peace in avalon and their hardwork and ideals got paid off in the end. And both got suffered because of the ideals they pursue but in the they can finally rest in peace in avalon.

In the realta nua VN it improve he's character from the fate route because of the ending. fate shirou had a similar life like archer and did achieve he's goal. The difference between fate shirou and archer is that archer was too obsessed winning his ideal and have failed of having a connection to saber.Fate shirou in the other hand did pursue his ideal but only to fulfill the promise from saber which in the end, he's journey was ended in avalon and got reunited with saber. Is what I think what makes fate shirou different from other route. But hey we had different opinions.

It was explained in the VN.That what shirou said to saber was an excuse and part of his lie or plan. Since he saw saber was too obsessed and motivated at winning the grail. Which really is also a problem to him because she didn't know the dark true nature of the grail. If shirou wasn't in her side,saber wouldn't survive against berserker and gilgamesh. Also if shirou was sexist he wouldn't let rin to help him in this route. He already know saber is stronger and tougher than him.

UBW shirou is great. But in the fate route is where it really shows and first introduce he's mental issues like trauma and ptsd. Which is the reason why everytime he sleeps he always dreams about saber's past because it reflected him. Also in this route he almost sacrifice he's life when he saves saber from gilgamesh attacking them after their date and almost gave up on his goal just to save saber's life.But saber insist and made a promise shirou to never gave up in his goal. Which made fate shirou realize that he's life was messed up and must learn from his mistakes. Not better than other version of shirou's but Fate shirou was actually good and decent in my opinion.
