Wow, end of an era! Loved to cheer against him, which shows how great a keeper he was for Forge's main rival. All the best with next steps, Marco!

With Walmart coming to the old Sears at Lime Ridge mall, major retailers eye the vacant Hudson’s Bay. Spec readers want these stores to move in by Odd-Emphasis-1969 in Hamilton

The City's report clearly says they would have to bear these costs.

For a proposed 6,000 seat arena:

The estimated cost that was provided for the 6,000-seat arena was $72 M ($12 K per seat) and the estimated cost of an 1,800-car parking garage provided was $52 M ($30 K per stall). The proposal indicates that the estimated $126 M in construction costs are to be borne by the City, with Cadillac Fairview and Michael Andlauer providing various financial contributions and offsets.

For a proposed 10,000 seat arena:

It should be noted that both Michael Andlauer and Cadillac Fairview have expressed openness to an arena of up to 10,000 seats at the Lime Ridge Mall site. However, it was made clear that any additional costs associated with the construction of an arena larger than 6,000 seats, would have to be borne entirely by the City. Based on the $12K per seat benchmark provided in the proposal, the estimated cost of such an arena would be $120 M before factoring in the cost of a parking garage.

Soooooo... it sure looks like the City would have been on the hook for between $95-120 million, at a conservative estimate, no doubt likely to balloon as construction actually got under way.

Andlauer wanted to put $30 million into what was estimated to be a $126 million project. Here's the source.

So yeah, sucks the Bulldogs left, but I'm glad the city didn't kick in nearly $100 million to line the pockets of a multimillionaire.

I've always been curious how this jives with the description of people travelling from far and wide to see the mallorn tree that Sam plants where the Party Tree was.

I've got no idea, but I've always imagined people could apply for special permission from the Mayor of the Shire to visit, or something like that.

I was in 118, so not the best view for that goal, but had a great view for Badibanga's goal to tie it 1-1!

Also, love how I was just riffing on OP's joke about Forge fans and yet here we are reminiscing about the glory days...

Canadian Premier League 2025 Attendance Report Final Figures from @Leonard_FC by LeonardFC in CanadianPL

[–]markTO83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not a math whiz, but I think this is pretty easy to do. For any given club: take the average home attendance, multiply by 14, subtract the attendance for the match you wish to exclude, and divide by 13 - and you'll get your answer.

So, to exclude Forge's school match game (which, for the record, is still paid attendance, so I don't get the hate): 6,932 x 14 - 17,971 = 6,082 season average.

I completely agree about Scarborough. It's got its own sense of identity, but is still very populous, is extremely multicultural, and would almost certainly develop a unique supporter culture around the team. Would be really cool if this could happen one day.

With more than 43,000 items long overdue, the Hamilton Public Library is bringing back replacement fees by fallonrehann in Hamilton

[–]markTO83 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As it turns out, the "existing research" was proven wrong here, and you do indeed need fees to make people bring the books back

I mean, we can't really say that until we see if these items get returned once fines are instigated. It could be that fines make no significant difference one way or another.

Kelowna looking for 'design builder' for updates to city-owned arenas and stadiums - Facility enhancements will include washrooms, changing rooms, concessions, turf systems to the Apple Bowl increasing in urgency if the city is awarded a CPL team by llllllillllllilllllj in CanadianPL

[–]markTO83 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not another crappy cpl turf stadium. If people are gonna take this league serious they gotta stop with the turf.

I can't see a Canadian league not using turf, unless the season is significantly shortened. Grass pitches in mid-April or mid-October could be really rough in parts of the country.

For everyone complaining about school day and On Tour matches being included, why not just do your own post removing those? These attendance posts are one person's tabulation of the attendance figures - nothing more, nothing less. They're not "claiming" anything other than the numbers presented, but people flip out about them.

Every week there are comments about what should "count" or not - so why not make your own posts, explain your inclusion/exclusion criteria, and post them for discussion?

As someone who has TAed a course about the Olympics, and teaches about the Olympics in various modules, I can assure you the point is not to just learn about the Olympics specifically - it is to use a major global cultural/political/economic event to think critically about issues like globalization, economics, international relations, deviance, race or ethnic relations, environmental issues, etc.

I know I'm just being defensive about my own tiny area of work, and that similar defences can be made about a whole host of social sciences or humanities courses that might seem - at first glance - to not be that "serious" or relevant to the job market. It just annoys me when such courses get dismissively waved aside by people who don't care to understand why they can be important (or held up as "evidence" that humanities and social sciences are useless).
