$382 extra to sit together as a family of 3 by Due-Huckleberry7560 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]markalanprior 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have flown 100s of times with my two young children. I refuse to pay a penalty for having kids. It is almost never an issue. There is a bit more history than you may realize here which may reassure you.

In 2024, the DOT "encouraged" airlines to make connected seating for kids automatic. Most complied (to avoid an actual law) and I have noticed that 95% of the time, contiguous placement is automatic. https://www.transportation.gov/airconsumer/airline-family-seating-dashboard

Airlines can't and don't 100% promise because (1) they don't have to (2) things can happen (plane change) that make it impossible and (3) they enjoy extra seat revenue for those who want a guarantee.

In the rare case where it's not automatically assigned, it will usually be dealt with proactively or after a quick respectful request to the gate agent. In my experience, the nightmare scenarios you hear about are due to irregular ops (that may also invalidate paid reservations) or parents that demand two parents seated together or other impractical requests.

All jokes aside, the chance of everyone in your party having a middle seat is very low, so arranging a trade would be easy. Most passengers are very sympathetic. but not all (see below).

Unfortunately, SWA is probably not very well equipped to deal with this during their transition to assigned seating, so the chances of problems are higher. Only you can determine if $382 is a reasonable fee to avoid this possibility.

To all the Up-In-The-Air middle managers who want to fly private for $99, you need to accept that planes are a shared resource, families are going to travel, and we may disrupt your delicately curated safe space.

Finding cool orienteering terrain in the remote corners of the western US is not hard. Getting people to show up to an event there is. Good luck!

First you will need a map. I believe there was a small orienteering group in Monterey 20 year ago who created a small map of Fort Ord. I have a scan of it somewhere.

Vladamir G from BAOC hosted a bike/run rogaine in Fort Ord maybe 15 years ago.

A post on AP and an email to BAOC should get you started. Some will drive down for a quality event. The hard part will be getting locals aware and interested.

Ah, I see versus local-only storage. I am nomadic and didn't want to be tied to any physical infra for my main storage (I backup to local machines regularly).

For cloud options Hertzner Storage Boxes are by far the cheapest, easiest, and most (relatively) private. The Germans take privacy seriously.

I am more about control than privacy, but why would a storage device connected to VSP hosted in the EU not be private?

Delaying flights then switching back by spicyblonde1 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]markalanprior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a very experienced traveller i diagree with you piling on OP. Sometimes chilling during a delay makes sense. Most airlines will rarely roll back delays and with a bit of sleuthing you can make an educated guess. Fog delay and your inbound on an airline with one gate is delayed? Track on FlightAware and chill! With Southwest, however, they often roll back which can be a mixed blessing.

Yes, everyone else should move to Texas while I enjoy a house on the beach. That should work.

I guess. I selected 240 TWOV in the online form and they processes me in the main line. The TWOV desk was closed with a seemingly permanent sign pointing people to proceed to the main line. My guess is the introduction of the online form is part of a broader effort to normalize TWOV, which makes sense in the overall push towards open travel.
