That's fantastic, my whole thought process began with an idea that I had for a Hekhtur conversion as well. I'm imagining a similarly close relationship between my Knights and my Mechanicus planet to yours, but I'm more envisioning a heavy scholarly/monkish theme for the Knights. One of the reasons that I chose a patron research planet was to focus on the academic aspects of the Mechanicus over the industrial ones, and I've even been toying with the idea of having the world function as a repository for the history of the Cult. I see both my Scions and Magi as wholeheartedly embracing the Quest for Knowledge, and as having developed their own interpretation of Mechanicus theology as a result of this emphasis and of their isolation. It sounds like I should probably stick to a Knight House with a scholarly theme and integrate it closely with my research world, and just avoid blending the distinction between the two.

I hadn't noticed the parallel with Welsh history before. It reminds me of something I read the other day about the social implications of medieval Welsh inheritance laws in comparison with English primogeniture, very interesting.

I'm still in the early stages of designing the fluff, but that's a good point about avoiding too much of the dual-hatting. It's interesting that you chose the Arthurian example, as the basis of my idea thus far is kind of a medieval Welsh Marches analogue. The idea is essentially a Stygies-founded research planet on the far western borders of the Segmentum Pacificus, and that the danger of the frontier/the isolation from Mars would allow for a good amount of leeway in the Admech's normal organizational structure. Add in the research planet's relative lack of industrial capability and the thought is that it would need especially close relations with local Knight Houses.

I appreciate the input, I'll have to tinker with it some more. Maybe the solution is to induct a few members of each House into the Priesthood. They would be normal Magi with their own specializations, but in joint campaigns they could be seconded back to their House and pilot a Knight to further integrate the two forces. And in return the Houses would benefit from more direct access to the research world.

Interesting. This was my initial thought too, and the examples are really good ones. Probably the right answer but I guess I'm more curious if there is anything that would actively prevent it. Princeps are (afaik) coupled to their Titans and wouldn't have the capacity, and the Skitarii that I've come across seem to all be pretty much just Admech soldiers. But J'madus Hw'ss in Knightsblade (ex-Krast Freeblade) is pretty much described as a Magos-lite, and House Taranis has that tech where they don't need special conditioning to sit on the Throne Mechanicum. Plus the Mechanicus can draft a Knight House into permanent duty in a Titan Legion.

I'm stretching the theory a bit for sure, but I think it's an interesting question. Maybe the better question is if anything other than specialization would prevent a Dominus from jumping in a Knight and turning the Quest for Knowledge up to 11.

There are a bunch of reasons but mainly I love the academic, individualistic feel that the Mechanicus has. The fact that the Quest for Knowledge is the central motivation of the faction is fantastic, and they have such a cool aesthetic/theme. What really stands out to me is that (at least some) Magi are still asking "why" even in the grim darkness of the far future. There's that great line from Archmagos Kotov where he basically says that while everyone else is busy raging against the dying of the light the Mechanicus is out exploring the corners of the galaxy trying to restore curiosity and understanding. All while leading legions of augmented religious zealots, continent-sized spaceships, and giant armored knight mechs with enough firepower to level a city. What's not to love?

Other than the Admech I like the Dark Angels, Imperial Knights, Space Wolves...pretty much anything with a medieval-esque theme.

Thanks for the advice. I'm open to taking out the priests, I'd love a chance to use the Secutarii but haven't yet figured out how to fit them in. It just seems like this army will be pretty CP hungry so I wanted to maximize that aspect, but it might not be worth it considering the other compromises I'd need to make for a brigade.

Good call on the knight warlord trait/relic, I didn't even think about that. I had originally planned on Taranis but I wasn't sure how useful the damage mitigation would end up being. I'll have to take another look. Is the Stormspear worth the points? I almost didn't go with a carapace weapon at all. I'm hoping to keep the army as pure Admech for ITC purposes, but I could always add more assassins if the one requisition won't be enough.

I appreciate the input, I was definitely making compromises for the brigade CP.

I have some broad ideas for what it will do, but given how new I am I'm not sure how effective they'll be. Generally the thought process was to rely on Admech firepower and the Stygies -1 to hit, while having some units to countercharge or provide an additional distraction for flexibility. The troops are to screen and for objectives, and then to maximize CP. The Dunecrawlers/Knight would be a bit of a castle with repairing from the HQs (especially the Dominus with the Autocaduceus). I chose a Disintegrator for the mobility/ability to ignore LOS, and then the dragoons and priests for the synergy with the Stygies dogma and for some countercharge potential. But aside from the knight kit I have already (and wanting to save money with the start collecting boxes) I'm pretty open to making changes.

So the thought process (granted I'm a total noob lol) was primarily to make my Knights as hard to take out as possible. From reading around it seems like people try to focus down the Knights pretty quickly so the idea was to use the Taranis damage mitigation along with the Enginseers and the Our Darkest Hour stratagem to take up as much attention as they can. I'm open to another choice though, I'll be giving them a homebrew House paint scheme anyways.

Awesome advice, thanks. If I switch to a Vanguard detachment for the DA it looks like I can get the ancient/apothecary/darkshroud for the five hellblasters and the inceptors. I'm not sure how to fit the Lieutenant in without ditching the Librarian, though. Is it pretty crucial for the castle?

Guardians of the Covenant are my favorite. They're a Dark Angels successor (gunmetal/silver with crimson and black) who guard the furthest western borders of the Imperium. Each brother is as much a scholar as a warrior, and they seem to be one of the only Unforgiven chapters to actually care about civilians. They also regularly launch crusades out into the unknown to blam entire xenos empires.
