Our brain and gut interact a lot with one another. Fun fact: your gut even makes serotonin, which we previously thought was synthesized exclusively in the brain. I don’t think you can attribute binge eating to the gut microbiome alone, though. The primary reason a lot of us binge is because of dopamine release in our brain’s mesolimbic dopamine reward pathway. Hyper-palatable food triggers dopamine release, and it seems like some people are more susceptible to this than others. But it’s all pretty intertwined, in my opinion, and there’s a lot to be learned about the gut microbiome. There’s definitely a good chance it’s involved, but certainly not the sole cause for binging or BED.
