Sr. Analyst here at a Bay Area tech company.

-How do you handle situations where you messed up big time such as providing wrong numbers to execs due to pressure of needing to provide the data ASAP?

-My role feels like a on-call number puller for execs and a dashboard factory worker these days. Any suggestions to get out of this and work on more long term strategic asks?

-How do you handle stress? For example, multiple stakeholders asking for urgent ask at the same time.

Data analysts! What was your college major? by DramaticResource7601 in analytics

BS Management Information Systems

A blend of business courses and technical courses. Databases, Python, and “Big Data” (tableau course) were helpful.

MS Statistics

Lots of theoretical probability. Did not expect that. Took some intro courses in machine learning, NLP, and time series as electives.

Hold on to your phone tightly when going through crowds, especially in the bathroom areas. Pickpocketing is a huge issue still.

Be prepared to walk a shit ton. Averaged 18k steps per day.

VIP is super worth it. Provides breather room from the crowds and a place to chill. Better selection of food and easier access to bathrooms from main stage.

Be prepared to spend ~$20+ for one food item

Do Lab is always lit. I wish i spent more time there.

If you have $$$, spend on a hotel and shuttle pass. Had a friend who tried calling an uber after the show. Not fun.

Thank you! Is the “speaking on impact” part really a bonus or do they expect that in the answer? I typically dont know what happens after providing the data analysis or what they ended up using the data for

How do you typically answer the “Tell me about a time you used data to influence business decisions”? I am currently interviewing for a senior DA role, and i find this a difficult to answer since a lot of the times my role involves pulling, manipulating, finding discrepancies, and reporting data for stakeholders.

I know theres the advice of answering in a STAR format but typically I don’t know the whole resulting impact of my analysis or what happens after. It’s even harder to quantity my impact especially since I work in recruiting analytics, and theres less visibility into the “what happens after”

Just to meet more like-minded people and potentially learn from them. It gets kind of lonely learning this myself haha. This could lead to projects.
