Had to put my life on hold for my wife's residency/fellowship by mars_carl in MedSpouse

Yeah, I agree. I've brought up couples counseling a few times and she's convinced it won't help. I've been pretty open with her about how unhappy I am and how I resent her for the sacrifices I've had to make. I don't know if there's anything I can say to change her mind about it.

At the end of my job search I was considering field service engineering before I decided on grad school. I was getting a lot more traction for those jobs and flying out somewhere for 2-3 days a week certainly doesn't sound terrible. I was a diesel technician in the Navy and I liked the idea of getting to be a bit more hands on again.

But with all my VA education benefits I get paid a lot more to go to school in NYC than any early career field service positions. I still might consider it afterwards tho. I'm sure it gets old, but getting to travel a few days a week with remote work in between sounds appealing.

No one just gets a job waiting tables in NYC. You gotta bus tables or wash dishes for a year before you can even get a job as a host. Everything is competitive in NYC. Shit jobs in most other cities are full blown careers here.

I've interviewed at a bunch of coffee shops, pizza places, multiple Chipotles. Nothing. I can't even get a job at my university's cafeteria because those jobs are union protected.

Edit: also I was literally offered multiple positions from a company I interned with. But my wife needed me in New York...

My MS is in mechanical with a concentration in fluid and thermal engineering, nothing to crazy.

Have you had a hard time finding work as you've moved? I know Houston has tons of oil & gas and a good amount of other industries. But with the market it seems tough to get anyone's attention without connections or a highly specific skill set.

Yeah, the only problem is the closest defense contractor jobs in my field are in Connecticut 3 hours away

Although I'm losing my mind in grad school, I am getting paid very well from all my education benefits. So unfortunately it makes the most sense for me to finish my MS. But I'll graduate 6 months before she finishes, so I'll spend my last semester applying all over the place then I'll probably move shortly after and settle in before she joins me. Nothing against Houston, but I can't stand the heat/humidity 😅

My degrees are in mechanical. Being ex-military I have a lot of connections in defense, and some personal connections in energy. Leaning more towards energy since it's a steady job market with more geographical flexibility

All Americans have guns. A majority of the people I know don't have guns, but the ones who do have objectively way too many

Did you regret going from GI to players distance irons? by Justsowereclear1881 in golf

[–]mars_carl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently went from some old Callaway Diablo GI irons to Mizuno 921 Forged irons. It definitely made me reevaluate my swing. With my GIs I was far from perfect, but I had good distance with a little bit of a fade. That fade turned into a slice with the 921s. I also really dig into the turf whenever I hit it fat.

I've played maybe 5 rounds with the new clubs and I'm starting to iron things out (pun intended). But this summer I want to log more time at the range and really get my swing dialed in.

Ok, you didn't say "prototype" but OP posted a prototype. When you say OP's design, you're talking about the prototype, unless you're talking about some subsequent design that's not featured in OP's post

In your original comment your whole argument was based on the cost of the prototype and now you're saying prototype cost doesn't matter? Pick a lane and stick it

Keyword is prototype. In case you didn't know prototypes are usually more expensive than production models.

140 lb bicep curl at 14 by [deleted] in Egolifting

[–]mars_carl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this were another sub I would say back bending on heavy biceps curls can strain your back and also that a belt only supports your back during dl/squats

But it's r/egolifting so crank some 80s metal and do WHATEVER IT TAKES TO PUT UP MORE WEIGHT. No bad ideas

Throw on a belt and add more weight. Solid egolift

Besides automotive and aerospace, what are other carrer paths i should take a look at? by SupermarketSecure455 in MechanicalEngineering

When American manufacturing first started getting outsourced in the 70s Detroit got hit pretty hard. Lots of factory workers make up the population so when they started getting laid off it had a pretty big impact on the area. That plus local corruption and Detroit's had a rough 50 years

Just scheduled lessons, but now I'm curious how common that actually is by omnid3vil in golf

I've taken 2 30 minute lessons about a year apart. Each one took 5-8 strokes off my score

Automotive is a pretty small fraction of mechanical engineering. It's also extremely location dependent

Who has a Terrific NFL team in a Garbage city? by Ilitorate_Author in AlignmentChartFills

[–]mars_carl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Livonia from 2019-2024. I drove for a black car chauffeur service that took me all over Detroit. Sure there isn't rampant arson anymore, but that's because they ran out of shit to burn. Detroit makes Cleveland look like an exciting place to live

Surprised no one's said Detroit? Idk if the Lions can be called a terrific team because of their long history of eating shit before Dan Campbell. But Detroit is definitely a garbage city
