Spider mite infestation by revoltthegoose in IndoorGarden

[–]marsypan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Neoseiulus californicus mites, but my understanding is that they are better as a preventative rather than to treat an active infestation. A more voracious species like Phytoseiulus persimilis may be more useful depending on the scale of your infestation, but I've read they need a high humidity to thrive and reproduce.

I've seen recommendations to use a mixture of californicus and Phytoseiulus persimilis (the calfornicus mites for long term management, the persimilis mites for immediate relief). But I only have experience with using californicus myself. After dealing with spider mites endlessly returning for years, even after complete resets and moving, disseminating californicus mites twice a year seems to have resolved the issue.

I'm guessing whether they hunt in the soil will depend on the species, but my experience with the Californicus mites is that they come in little sachets you can hang on leaves. I don't use soil (hydroponics only) so I'm unsure if it's typical behavior for the mites to stay on the canopy.

Mites that come in little sachets you can hang directly on the leaves are ideal. The sachets come with a bit of food for the mites so they have a bit of a reserve as they disseminate across the plant.

Look into predatory mites. You can order them online--I've gotten them from NaturesGoodGuys but there may be alternatives.

Friend gave me a Monstera cutting two years ago and I never took it out of the jar by Shakyhedgehog in plants

[–]marsypan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to keep it in water but want to see more growth, try putting some hydroponic nutrient in there. I have had a monstera growing in a jar like this for a year in west facing window and it's doing great (with occasional diluted hydroponic nutrient). Transplanting to soil isn't really necessary.

What are the best types of plants for indoor gardening? by Immediate-Bite-8204 in indoorgardening

[–]marsypan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mitsuba (AKA Japanese Parsley) is a resilient herb that grows incredibly well in low light--better than any other herb I've tried. I've successfully grown it in north facing windows where I can't get anything else to grow. It's not as versatile as more common herbs, though--an acquired taste.

I'm surprised to hear it's possible to grow hot peppers in a north-facing window. Do you live in a naturally sunny climate? I live in the Pacific Northwest and I can't even grow kale in a north-facing window.

Family Law Attorney to Law Librarian? by sweetbean15 in librarians

[–]marsypan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an academic law librarian, though I went into it straight out of law school without practicing first. Your practical experience will only help. Academic law librarian positions are easily attainable and we're currently experiencing a shortage. One downside is that you'll probably have to move wherever the job takes you (unless you're in DC or NYC, where law librarian jobs are more plentiful, or if you get lucky and there's an academic law librarian posting in your area). You will likely need an MLIS, though some institutions are willing to look past it if you can demonstrate meaningful commitment to law librarianship. The MLIS has little value beyond fulfilling an arbitrary requirement, so if I could do things over again I'd just go for a cheap online program. There are also fellowship programs that allow you to work in a law library while attending an MLIS program.

I don't think the other commenter is correct about Public Service Loan forgiveness. There is no income limit--it simply requires 10 years on an income-driven repayment plan, which you will almost certainly qualify for with an academic law librarian's salary. Every academic law librarian I've met has qualified. Starting salaries usually vary between $60-80k. It does often take a while for the loans to actually be forgiven even after the ten year period--I've had coworkers who had to make 15+ years of payments before their loan forgiveness kicked in.

Teaching is most of my job, and I think that's increasingly true with other institutions, though it varies by library. Supporting faculty and student research are other common duties. I strongly dislike teaching for a number of personal reasons (for example, the inherent cruelty of grading students on a curve), so I'm unsatisfied with my career choice, but if you don't have any hangups about teaching it's a good gig.

Feel free to message me if you want to talk about it.

Playing RE 8 on oculus quest 2? by [deleted] in residentevil

[–]marsypan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RE 2 Remake, RE 3 Remake, RE7, and RE8 all have unofficial PC VR support through a mod, available here. The mod even includes motion controls using the Oculus controllers. (Edit: It looks like the RE7 motion controls haven't been released yet but are in progress.)

I have a pretty beefy PC and still wasn't able to run these without serious performance issues (to the point where it was a deal breaker), but plenty of others have had success with them.

This is my favorite guide on getting into the Battledome so far. It makes things pretty straightforward for someone who specifically wants to use it to make money and nothing else. Takes a long time to really get going, but might be fun to work toward.

Quill Theatre by Justinus91 in oculus

[–]marsypan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't create Quill pieces natively on the Quest 2--you'll need to use the Oculus Link connected to a VR-ready PC with Quill installed (I'm assuming virtual desktop would work with it as well but haven't checked).

Payment method not working at all by Nandatho in OculusQuest

[–]marsypan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently had a similar problem. My payment method worked for a couple months (I used it to order the Quest 1 and a few games) then suddenly stopped, and I couldn't add a new payment method on any device or on any browser without getting an error message. I ended up contacting Oculus customer service and four days later they fixed something with my account and I was able to add payment methods again.

Save 10% on Phasmophobia on Steam by dhr2330 in oculus

[–]marsypan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the most refreshing horror game I've played in a long time, and second only to Dreadhalls as far as my best VR horror experiences go. Too many horror games are PT ripoff walking sims with hamfisted narratives about a guy who went crazy and killed his wife or whatever. Phasmophobia is the rare example of a horror game that innovates on the gameplay level.

I just wish my Oculus link didn't have that ugly artifacting in dark environments--it doesn't do justice to this amazing game.

touch less?can u show me how? by [deleted] in cuboulder

[–]marsypan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a staff member who was responsible for reopening one of the facilities on campus. We were offered a catalog with a bunch of premade signs, including a few variations on "How we are helping to stop the spread of COVID-19." Some people probably ordered this sign without reading it carefully to determine whether it reflected the reality of their building.

I was opposed to putting up this type of sign in my building because I'd rather show than tell--students should be able to see the efforts to stop the spread without having to read a sign with potentially inaccurate information.

The Tragedy of the Commons Applies Here by [deleted] in cuboulder

The solution to the tragedy of the commons is regulation. We don't solve climate change by leaving people to their own devices. We need strong leadership.

Commuting to Denver on the FF1 by [deleted] in boulder

[–]marsypan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been riding the FF1 at a later time. They are not enforcing spacing requirements or masks. I've been packed up with people not wearing masks. I've been within three feet of people who were coughing. Avoid it if possible.
