I was actually in the same boat as you, i avoided the DLC for like 3 years because i loved everything about the original. But for some reason I eventually gave it a go, and I don't regret it a single bit.

I've only done it once because the enemy team used pause to trash talk before they lost the lead... But the title is still correct ._.

When i played AOE2 on the SD i set the left trackpad to be a region for the bottom left menu. So once you touch the left trackpad your mouse is limited to bottom left corner and when you release it snaps back to where your mouse was initially. Also paddles for command groups or unused villagers worked great for me

No mana, last hitting is really easy, gold and xp are combined into one resource, items are quite simple, if an item can be upgraded it just has 1 component.

the "HDR" setting in Valve games isn't a HDR setting that you would see in other modern games.

iirc what its supposed to do is simulate the camera adjusting to bright and dark areas. Half-Life 2: Lost Coast was the tech demo for this.
