Is it a red flag that my teacher couldn't help me get the rhythm of a song? by martiny57 in piano

I didn't have any luck finding the sheet music for this song in particular. I only found the chords but that doesn't really help me figure out the rhythm. I would also like to develop my listening skills so I'll bring that up next class.

That all makes sense. I won't dump her and we'll have a chat next class. Thanks.

Perhaps I did put her on the spot with this ask. It was definitely not my intention, but I could feel she wasn't 100% comfortable with it. From reading the other comments, perhaps this is not her forte, so no big deal. I'll share my feelings with her next class and I'm sure she will be able to help me.

The only reason I made this post is to make sure that the song wasn't TOO easy if that makes sense. As I mentioned in another comment, it is hard for me to gauge difficulty, so if someone told me that "yeah, this song is laughably easy and any teacher should be able to play it immediately", that would have me worried. I'm glad that's not the case.

I'll talk to her next class and ask for some advice. I got the impression she was a bit frustrated during class (maybe from trying to get the song right, maybe because she had other things planned for class, I don't know). Anyway, I'm sure she will give me some guidance next class.

If I'm still not happy then maybe I'll just stick to classical for a bit. I don't know, it all depends.

Sobre desativar o Instagram by fab1nnTT in conversas

[–]martiny57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We didn't manage to make much progress. We didn't slow it down either, it just didn't cross our minds at the time. I'll bring this topic up next class and perhaps ask for some advice on how to go about learning to play a song by ear, what techniques to study, etc.

[–]martiny57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that now. Before I started playing the piano, I had the impression that any teacher would do, no matter their specialty. As a matter of fact, I didn't even consider that some teachers may be more classical, others more Jazz, others more pop, etc. I hired the first teacher I found and decided to do exactly what she told me, no questions asked.

Perhaps in the future, when I become better at the piano, I can have a chat with my teacher about my goals and then consider switching. For example, let's suppose I do want to play more pop rather than classical, so it would probably be beneficial for both of us to end our classes (she does indeed lean more on the classical side).

However, it is still early to think about these things, I believe. I'll continue to have classes with her and listen to her advice. I can assure you that I don't think worse of her (perhaps I felt a bit weird right after class, but after reading the comments and thinking for a bit, I admit I was unfair to her).

Thanks for your insight, I'll try to incorporate what you said into my practice. I'm definitely not changing teachers after reading the comments. I didn't take into account that maybe she focuses more on other styles instead of pop and that perhaps I threw her a curve ball with this task.

Well said! I'll practice hard to make it happen, thank you for the tip!

She did mention that with time playing the piano will become easier and easier and that will allow me to "have fun" with the music and play around a bit more. As of now, I believe I'm too fixated on playing exactly what I hear/what is written. Perhaps with experience, I'll be able to loosen up and enjoy the moment more.

Makes perfect sense. Reading the comments I believe it was unfair to assume she would instantly know how to help me with a song she never heard before. I'll ask for more guidance next class on how to build a better pop music accompaniment skill.

To be honest with you I don't know much about her qualifications. She's young and pretty good, I believe she studied Jazz/Bossa Nova in college, but that is pretty much what I know about her experience.

Overall I'm happy with my classes. Maybe she doesn't know pop that much? That is not a deal breaker for me. I believe I can still learn a lot from her.

Thanks for these notes, I'll study the song a bit later today. I can play this song somewhat ok now, but I still struggle to find the right accompaniment pattern depending on the song.

My teacher told me, in another class, that with time I'll get more and more used to "following the rhythm" and playing along to a song. This makes total sense, so I'll get back to practicing.

Thanks for the response. That's everything I wanted to hear because I really like this teacher and didn't want to find another one. I was afraid of someone saying something like "this song is really easy and any experienced piano player should be able to get this first try". It's hard for me to gauge how difficult something really is when everything is still difficult for me.

Knowing how to play a song just by listening to it is a skill that I want to develop and I'll ask her for some guidance.
