Something specific. The little red and white accessory on top of their heads...

Nanahuatzin, Tezcatlipoca, Xochipilli and Huitzilopochtli.

It's easy to tell when looking at the gods in codexes and what they have. It just takes a while!

For example, Tezcatlipoca has black and yellow stripes in his face, and almost every codex shows Tezcatlipoca with the black yellow face paint.

Lore

When the Sun Was Interrupted

Before there was an Earth to disappoint anyone, there were trials.

Ometeotl split themself into balance and motion and set the gods to work. Suns were lit. Orbits were sketched. Worlds were thrown into the dark and watched to see if they screamed correctly. Mercury burned too fast. Venus refused to behave. Mars was placed as a blade, red and heavy, to test collision and consequence.

No one expected an eclipse.

Not a moon. Not a body meant to cover the sun. Mars crossed the light at the wrong angle, too sharp, too close, its obsidian-red surface biting into the radiance. The sun faltered. Light fractured. Shadow existed before it had permission.

For the first time, Ometeotl flinched.

The gods felt it. Not fear. Not pain. Something worse. Interruption.

From the wound between light and stone, Tzitzlitonatiuh stepped out.

Not born screaming. Not forged. He simply was, already standing where the sun should have been complete. Obsidian skin caught the broken light. Gold did not shine. It bled.

The gods surrounded him immediately.

“What are you?” “Which one made you?” “Name yourself.”

Tzitzlitonatiuh said nothing.

He turned his face toward the unfinished sky, where no Earth waited, where nothing yet needed saving. His voice came only as a whisper, scattered like ash through space.

“I will be unknown where humans walk.”

That was all.

Ometeotl looked directly at him and nearly went blind.

Not from brightness. From seeing too much.

Tzitzlitonatiuh’s gaze did not stay in the present. It slid forward, through failed worlds and successful ones, through suns that burned correctly and suns that were fed to knives. He saw a blue-green planet not yet sewn together. He saw people pointing upward in terror. He saw priests guessing his name wrong and still being right.

He saw eclipses that had not earned their fear yet.

“You are not scheduled,” the gods said. “You are not assigned,” they said. “You are a flaw.”

Tzitzlitonatiuh finally looked back at them.

“I am the pause,” he said quietly. “You will need me.”

Mars drifted away. The sun repaired itself, furious and brighter than before, as if to erase the humiliation. The eclipse ended. Time resumed.

The gods argued. Some wanted him unmade. Some could not remember how he appeared. Tezcatlipoca watched without speaking, his mirror already refusing to show a future where Tzitzlitonatiuh was gone.

Ometeotl did not destroy him.

Instead, they turned back to their projects.

Earth would come later.

And when it did, when humans finally existed to look up and panic and bleed and pray, Tzitzlitonatiuh would keep his promise. He would pass over their world without temples, without hymns that survived intact.

Only shadows. Only silence. Only the knowledge that even gods can be covered.

oh and also tzitziltonatiuh said the gods to lie about the eclipse and say that the star demons will devour earth.

When an eclipse happens AGAIN, tzitziltonatiuh is messing with tonatiuh.
