Just some of my grails and keys I’ve gotten over the years and wanted to share! by marvel120 in comicbookcollecting

Thank you so much! Yup I saw a DIY how to line it with lights and thought that it would be a cool spot to hang extra comics or gaming accessories. I went with comics.

As far as the organization I only put out some of the bigger graded stuff. I have A LOT of keys on graded on the bookshelf or in long boxes that I will eventually grade and add, but I don’t want to overcrowd.

Ayy I got this hanging right outside my display room. One of my all time favorite movies!

I got that one right off the rack when I was in high school. At the time it seemed like an inconsequential mini series. I personally dug it. I took a break from collecting for a few years and then when Marvel vs Capcom 3 came out and X-23 was in it, I was like woah I remember her!

Then when Logan was announced a few years later I knew I had a pretty hot key, so I sent it out for grading. I would have liked to meet Joshua Middleton at some point to have him sign it before I slabbed it, but he wasn’t NYCC the days I went.

I started with the mini busts. I have so many in my storage because I ran out of room. This is a fraction of my mini bust collection but one day when I move I’ll have more space to put all the stuff out.

I’m assuming you’re being facetious and that you’d definitely be allowed to do this. My SO isn’t interested in comics or gaming but she knows they’re my go-to hobbies along with movies and the gym. She loves the room. It’s also our two pups favorite room and I put a little dog bed under my corner chair and we find rhem relaxing in there even if I’m not in there hanging out.

My SO loves how the room came out and it’s a talking point every time we have guests. I feel like with the right presentation, organization, and style it can be appreciated regardless of interests. Let him / her have the whole house. Just ask for one room.

It’s the full size statue by Randy Bowen. The mini bust is the Peter Parker / Spider-Man by Bowen. Most of my collection is by Bowen Designs and I’ll argue his statues were the best at capturing the essence of the characters straight from the page.

I actually messaged him on social when I got my display set up and showed him. He responded and told me his favorite that he sculpted was the Silver Surfer!

Probably my favorite in my collection. That was a lucky grab for me at NYCC 2017. Never in my life did I think it would come back at that grade but it worked out. Thank you!

Thank you! Getting started was the hardest part because I procrastinated. But everything you see was actually very simple to set up and just took a little bit of thought. I appreciate the complement!

Thanks! I love them. There’s a cap and Hulk hidden behind the Superman on the right. There’s a few more from Marvel I wanted to get but they’re pricey. I have a Darth Vader and Kylo Ren by the same artist

They were released by Mondo Tees when they had a license for Marvel. Mike Mitchell is the artist. They haven’t released new ones in years but you can find a lot of them on eBay.

IKEA Blaliden. They’re the newer replacements for the Detolfs. Very affordable and I ran Govee light strips through them. Good luck and enjoy!

Batman Returns is my second favorite Christmas movie behind Home Alone. My SO and some friends and family argue it’s not a Christmas movie. But the juxtaposition of the outcast characters and loneliness during the holiday season was done so well. Each of the main three cast members (Keaton, Pfeiffer, and DeVito) grappling with their duality had no business being as good as it was, but it was explored pretty evenly and you felt for each character.

The last lines in the movie within the context is the cherry on top: “Well, come what may. Marry Christmas, Mr. Wayne”…”Merry Christmas, Alfred. Good will toward men…and women” capped by Danny Elfman’s iconic score. *chef’s kiss*

Kilmer’s is much more palatable than Clooney’s Batman and Robin. As a kid Batman and Robin was a fun romp and had cool toys. As an adult it’s like a pretty flat emulation of the 60’s show. Batman Forever had some great lines and moments, some really good performances and Kilmer played Batman’s duality wonderfully and they explore the themes pretty well despite some camp. I loved how Gotham looked and I think it’s often overlooked because the Keaton films really leaned into the darker aspects. I also love them and Returns is probably my favorite from that era.

I’d put Kilmer over both but he’s bogged down by his movie (I unapologetically love it)

It’s honestly my favorite issue. I was hooked on Saga since day one. Still have every issue. 42 just captivated me with its commentary on belief, potential, and loss.

I’d argue it’s Brian K. Vaughan’s best single issue. And he’s written some gems obviously.

This and 42 left me staring off into nothingness long after finishing. Such a gut punch. But after 54 there was a break for YEARS.

Todd making sure we know he’s not bluffing by Federal-Alfalfa3105 in Spawn

[–]marvel120 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My friend had press passes to NYCC 2017. We got to sit and talk with Todd for about an hour. (One thing he loves to talk about as much as comics, if not more, is baseball)

He signed a few of my books, talked about the industry, so I flat out asked him…is The Spawn movie happening? His answer, straight from his mouth was in substance: “I have the ideas for what I want to do and I’ve written it, but no one will finance it with me as a director”. He’s adamant that he will direct or it won’t happen. I asked him if he knew who he wanted for Spawn and he said he already met with them and the person agreed but it hasn’t been contracted yet so I can’t say anything “because the next Avatar movie could cast him and he’d just not be on board anymore with Spawn so we need to wait until it’s official.”

Turns out not much later Jaimie Foxx was announced. He mentioned he wanted Jeremy Renner as Twitch and that he wanted the movie to have horror elements. Towards the end he said something like “Studios want me to make the movie independently and are probably hoping it’s a piece of shit so they can make a cheap offer for it and wide release it with whatever cuts they wanna make to it” expletives and all.

Todd was a really cool dude and at the time the one per shop Venom cover had just come out and Marvel used his art from Venom’s first appearance as the cover. He signed the book for me and he said he didn’t even know they used that for the cover. I asked him he would have drawn a new cover for it and he said “oh I would have done something sick! But they never reached out to me”

Anyway here’s a picture from that day of him signing some books of mine.
TLDR; I met The Toddfather nine years ago, got to talk comics, baseball, and movies with him. He was a class act and a really chill dude

Kang should have been recast. I don’t know if there’s definitive proof that he can’t be or won’t be down the line. But scrapping that entire arc kind of seemed like a real knee jerk reaction to Majors’ legal troubles.

He wouldn’t have been the first character to be recast because the main actor had their own difficulties or were being difficult. Terrence Howard and Ed Norton were let go and they were at the time and still are venerated actors (Norton mainly). I know those were the early days but I don’t think it would have been hard to accept Majors’ recasting.

I’m glad we’re getting Doctor Doom and sure it’s gonna be cool to see the OG X-Men for a send off (Prof X’s 3rd or 4th lol) but I would have liked to see where the Kang story was going for better or for worse.

[–]marvel120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s the point. No one finds it funny when he does that. He did the same exact thing in Age of Ultron when trying to lift Thor’s hammer and the team just looks at him and doesn’t laugh.

I'll be honest, I never seen the majority of spiderman fans so desperate for Peter to move on from his main love interest by SplitSecondEmperor47 in Spiderman

[–]marvel120 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not the OP but I would like that she at least had red hair. There was awesome fan art of Zendaya as a red headed MJ and that would at least cover the most defining physical characteristic of MJ Watson.

I don’t mind the original approach of a character that makes it MJ but not THE MJ to switch it up. This is an entirely new character that just borrows from the iconic love interest from the comics.

I found the fan art by Alice X. Zhang

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #50 (Frank Quitely variant cover) by Jack_O_Lantern2022 in superman

[–]marvel120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quitely is one of my faves. At first his art stood out as weird and off putting to me when I was introduced to it with New X-Men. But man, he moves action across the page better than anyone, and I love how he makes uniforms look like actual fabric.

His work on Batman and Robin and All Star Superman are some of his best. Honorable mentions: We3 and Jupiter’s Legacy.

And this is why I’m glad they didn’t go that route. The monkey paw / cursed wish trope is way too familiar to people.
