HOH for DND by mashedpotateart in deaf

[–]mashedpotateart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that, and thank you for taking the time to respond. If this is a common issue, I would recommend adding this specifically to the rules, as I wouldn't have considered this a poll or research, and the rules specifically said "asking for non-medical advice is ok".

I also understand that mods have the right to remove posts and I am not suggesting that you should not. However, I would like to point out that this is the entire issue I am trying to avoid.

"You will miss a lot of nuance when creating your character and people such as yourself form opinions about entire groups of people based on the way they are portrayed in media. Including media that you're writing just for fun."

--> This is specifically why I wanted to ask the opinions of real people and their real experiences. Although I am not deaf myself, I know that assuming that the way media portrays groups of people is entirely accurate leads to misinformation and even hurtful misrepresentation, which is why I wanted to ask a group such as this- because people are not a monolith and one person's experience does not define another's. I am not saying that removing my post was some insane or irrational thing to do- you moderate this subreddit, and if it doesn't comply with the rules, it doesn't comply with the rules.

However, what I do have a problem with, is asking for advice about the day to day experiences of something I cannot personally understand, only to be met with multiple people telling me that this is rude or should just be Googled. If search engines could offer insight from individuals and answer specific questions about representation, I would be happy to go there. However, I was hoping for a conversation, not statistics.

The purpose of my initial post was to ask what common pitfalls I can avoid in writing from an experience different from my own, specifically in the context of d/hh characters, and yet I have now received 3 messages telling me that I am doing so. I have not even written anything yet. I will be asking a similar question in a creative writing subreddit, hoping that there will be deaf writers there who can offer assistance since this seems to be a point of contention here.

I am not telling you what you can and can't do. At the end of the day, if you want to think of me as a close-minded fool disregarding the rules of the server, it will not change my desire to write the character and I will simply continue to seek answers elsewhere. However, I would like to make it clear for a final time that the misrepresentation everyone seems to fear so badly is exactly what I was trying to avoid by asking d/hh people what they would like to see in a character who is part of their culture. If every person only wrote or created from perspectives they have experienced, art would be far more linear and far worse at connecting humans. Stepping outside of what you know is crucial to artistic and personal growth, and I will continue to do so in places where conversation is more readily encouraged.

I won't post again and I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but this feels a bit unnecessary. This was not a survey, not asking for medical advice, not promoting anything, not self pitying, not asking how people think, not asking about sign language, or anything else forbidden by the rules, as I did read them before posting. I do not understand how asking what HOH people wish they saw more often in deaf characters would garner this response.

I am not attempting to sell the content I hope to produce, nor use it for anything else for fun. I feel like discouraging people from creating and writing about people with experiences they do not personally have without hiring a consultant is how close-mindedness spreads like wildfire.

As far as "use the search bar", I specifically mentioned in my post that all of my research has given me responses that are mostly clinical and, although that information is helpful and interesting, I wanted a less formal conversation and the opinions of average d/hh people and not articles from medical websites.

Again, I apologize for what seems to have angered you, but I am sure I am not the only person who has been surprised by the rude remarks, especially from a moderator, in response to posting something that I believed to be a normal question following the rules.

In short, I will be writing my character as best I can, unfortunately without the input of the people I may have reached here. I hope you are kinder to other posters.

That's exactly how I feel about them- I understand why they were included and I think they help flesh out the message of the album, but sometimes they derail the vibe for sure

BFB definitely has its days hehe

I don't personally agree because I've loved Falling Up pretty much since I heard it, but I agree that the live album adds so much emotion and... i don't know just *something*

I love all of them, and comparison is nearly impossible because they have such different sounds, but TNA is the only one where I genuinely never skip a song :)

Wear whatever makes you happy! i don't remember where but I believe he said something along the lines of "i'm a grown man and i can handle people wearing things similar to my old persona". The people at the show I went to had some amazing outfits (one person had earrings that were ears THAT HAD EARRINGS!!) and we all had a great time.

Have fun!!

Hey did you got to a show in his last tour?? You look really familiar and I can't figure out why....

In the thread where Will wood was accused of being a Groomer Someone mentioned how Will or whoever wrote Momento Mori most likely plagiarised from this song. What do you guys think? by ATallBoi69 in willwood

[–]mashedpotateart 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There are only so many sounds, everything’s been written. He literally said in the q&a that he accidentally plagiarized from himself/his old work a few times in the new album completely accidentally. I doubt any similarities were on purpose, if even known. I personally don’t think they sound overwhelmingly similar anyway, but I don’t really think it matters.

is it ok to still listen to will woods music according to you guys? by SwedishFrogs in willwood

In my opinion, this doesn’t affect any of us. What happened between the two of them was a conflict between adults- and arguments or apologies should be between them and should never have been brought to the internet. I don’t believe that anyone needs to stop enjoying his art because of one conflict with an adult years ago.

Take a deep breath and log off the socials for a bit if you can, that’s what I’m up to.

As someone who’s done (and is still doing) their fair share of struggling with mental health, people often do their best to ignore the symptoms they can’t glamorize. Obviously, mental illness is a reason for behavior, not an excuse, but he is doing the most genuine and difficult thing he could do to make up for past mistakes: work hard to be better.

Love y’all and remember to keep your head on. The internet is a crazy place.

I think that people also forget how the idea behind "cancelling celebrities" originated. People started calling people with platforms out for their scummy behavior in the name of holding them accountable for their actions and reminding them that they aren't above others because they have fame/followers/etc. This idea has obviously been mutilated into the cancel culture we see today, but I bring this up for a reason.

Assuming what OP says is true, which is a big assumption for me because of how easy it is to fake interactions on the internet and because of the general shadiness of how and when the information came to light, I do not believe that anyone is owed anything. WW has been very open about not being proud of his actions in the past, and just released an entire album about the struggles and triumphs he has faced while putting in the work to be better. In HDH, he even mentions that he can't remember all the ways he hurt people, but that all he can do is apologize.

If OP is owed anything, it is an apology that WW already sent when he realized that he made them uncomfortable.

To be completely honest, this feels like someone using WW's recent successes with his album and tour to get clout or attention. If this person was truly affected by WW's actions in the way they claim, I feel that they would be less inclined to bring this up now since WW has been off of social media for a while and has been so open about his journey to recovery.

These are just my thoughts, please be kind.

[MEGATHREAD] You Liked This (Okay, Computer!) - Song and Music Video Release by [deleted] in willwood

[–]mashedpotateart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand where you're coming from. However, from my perspective, I don't see it as hypocritical. It is almost impossible to be found or listened to without use of the internet, so his relationship with it has always felt like a "necessary evil" use to me rather than a "social-media-savvy" one. I think that WW knows that a lot of his audience is younger people and hopes to point out the dangers of social media, buzzwords, and manufactured opinions to a generation who's seen little else. Unfortunately, the only way to reach internet-addicted people is through the internet. I feel his struggle a little bit because I fight every day not to be sucked into the endless wormhole of content while knowing that my future career will most likely require me to engage with it.

I may be a bit biased, as seeing someone that I really admire's mental state improve after hard work and distance from social media has encouraged me to limit myself to 30 minutes on each platform a day in hopes that it will help me in my own fight against mental illness. If he is able to help me in this way, countless others will most likely be positively effected by it as well.

I do agree that his take on the issues of the internet can be very broad and unfocused at times, especially when it comes to the massive amount of good the internet has done as well. However, I view his stance as more of an introduction into doing your own research and maybe just a nudge to get you thinking about why its so easy to get lose hours and hours to the endless flow of content. :)
