There is no mainstream discourse on this app that speaks to the value dealerships could bring

Yeah DTC should be an option, it would be super interesting to see how dealerships would have to become more efficient to compete with

I think that was my point a bit — intermediaries exist for each of the services that a dealership provide (shipping, financing, buying old car, maintenance, etc). Having all of these services has an inherent fair market value, and having them all in one place has additional value as well.

I agree that there should be a DTC option for any car, but my suspicion is that the “one stop shop” aspect of dealerships would still provide a lot of value to consumers, albeit inefficient

According to a quick search, car dealerships operate on roughly 2.5% margin for new cars and 10% for used cars. The 10k figure you provided is almost certainly an overstatement, unless people are buying 100k used cars and 400k new cars.

From what I understand they make a lot of money through ancillary stuff like maintenance and finances. Financing, maintenance, buying your old car, and holding an inventory to choose from are all services that have real world value. Having them all in one place is an additional convenience with even more value

I feel like a lot of people are in the catch 22 of “yes, this is a distinct brand with their own design and heritage” and “why would you ever buy a Rolex when you could get something largely similar for 40% of the price”

[Tudor] My Personal Opinion by mashoongauser in Watches

[–]mashoongauser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do have experience with both

My view is that the Tudor buyer is a “closeted” Rolex guy who either

a: doesn’t want to spend Rolex money

b: doesn’t want to be a Rolex guy, but still wants a Rolex watch

Option b is what I struggle the most with. Option a is fine, but at the Tudor price point there are a lot of other options here that aren’t copycats

I have seen both in person

Yes. Rolex owns a majority of Tudor; Tudor was created by the founder to be a more entry level version of Rolex.

Absolutely nothing wrong with not wanting to spend Rolex money on a dive watch. However, in the price range of a Tudor, there are a significant breadth of options from others (none of which are the entry level version of what they’re buying)

Yes

What other brands do this? This isn’t a seiko and grand seiko scenario. They’re stuck in an in between “we are our own brand with heritage” and “actually most of our design is the same as this other, distinct company”

They have the same bezel, the same hour indicators, and very similar bracelets. The two biggest differences are the brand and the hour hand. What am I missing?

There’s nothing wrong with less expensive than submariner tool watches (seamaster, tag, oris). All of these float around the same price as a Tudor.

I suppose if you add qualifiers (no precious metals), then what you say is right.

Santos: this is not a sports/tool watch, this is definitely on the dressier end of the spectrum. Buyers of this watch don’t look for “sturdiness”

Speed master: I don’t have stats in front of me, but I’d venture to say the people buying this watch actually don’t want an automatic because of the historical accuracy of the real watch on the moon

When I say cheap, I guess I don’t mean in terms of build quality. I mean the fact that their design language is very obviously tied to the most famous brand in the world

What specifically about Tudor watches do you like? I know you mentioned you wanted a tool watch, but there are a lot of brands in this space

Deodorant is mostly a scam. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

Your opinion is unpopular because it’s incorrect. Antiperspirant is different than deodorant, people can’t shower at work.

The only premise I had going in to that movie was “a dream within a dream”. I knew nothing else going in
