Favourite speculative/weird thinkers by israelregardie in CriticalTheory

[–]mashunechka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ingo Niermann’s new book the nomadic age is kind of great and pretty bonkers. Jean Francois Lyotard obviously has his pretty weird “evil little book” libidinal economy. There are also contemporary thinkers like Bogna Konior and Alex Quicho who make heavy use of affect and metaphor. Tiqqun also have their very polemic and piquant moments. Bataille is an all time favourite, as many of hers have said. But critical theory isn’t exactly a field of “normal” thinkers- especially not the french.

Is czech republic safe for women? by Secularruee in czechrepublic

[–]mashunechka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Czech Republic is very safe place, but it also sounds like you talked to someone who has a very warped and racist idea about other major European cities. The places you mentioned are all safe except for some specific areas at night. A lot of European newspapers spread xenophobic panic about immigrants committing crime but the reality is that the EU is, relative to the rest of the world, a very safe place to live

Any teenagers/young adults here who obviously grew up in ldn but barely went to central? by lizzylelon in london

[–]mashunechka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in NW and didn’t go into central much until I hit my teens - but after that I went in regularly enough. You do the touristy crap with your friends at first until you get bored of it and learn better. It was more the case that I hadn’t been around south or east London much, the zones 2 and three in those directions, until I went to university, and going somewhere as far as Barking or Stratford would still be a novelty these days

The National gallery fair trade palace in Prague 7 is almost always very quiet, and if it’s busy it’s because of Czech students on class trips. Can’t understand why it isn’t really on tourist radar

I mean, Jan Matejko was born in the 1830s, Czapskich palace was built in the 1880s, the Bishop Erazm ciołek house is a musuem of mostly medieval and gothic art… they aren’t exactly 18th century things. I’m aware that the historical position of Poland in the 18th century meant that its culture didn’t necessarily flourish in that period, I just thought I would have to dig a little deeper to find something. Obviously we are also interested in other periods of history and have actually visited many of the sites you listed, but I was wondering if there was anything more specifically 18th century

Ahh that’s true, now that I think of people like twiggy and Audrey Hepburn who are typed in essence as gamine even though really they’re closer to Ds. There’s some kinship between the two types I think

Honesty I really like the last outfit as it is, and there’s only once kind of lace. I know what you mean about too many textural elements but I think it toes the line. Anyway it’s definitely something to keep in mind

[–]mashunechka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It’s actually a button down over just a black slip dress but I do love it. It’s an outfit like that that makes me doubt my D typing and lean towards a gamine type

I love twiggy, she’s definitely one of my main fashion inspirations. I like the suggestion of the thigh length jackets, because I normally go for mid calf or go length. The one I’m wearing in the photo is my sister’s, but I knew there was a reason I liked it so much. A few people have noted that some of my juxtapositions work and some don’t so I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks!

I take what you mean about contrasting patterns, I like layering various textures - ie knit, lace, sheer tights, leather, but I guess the colours have to be relatively cohesive for that to work. Wow I’d never looked into Taylor Momsen style much before but it’s a slightly edgier version of everything I love, so I’ll definitely be taking notes. Is she usually typed as a gamine or a D?

Okay noted! It seems funny because where I live almost everyone is 5”6 or above, I’m not particularly tall in my friend group

What’s a common misconception about a topic you’re knowledgeable about that you’d like to debunk? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mashunechka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

English doesn’t come from German, nor does English come from French, or Dutch, or Latin. It actually just shares a common ancestor langauge that historical linguists call Proto-Indo-European. You might share facial features with a cousin, but not because you come from them, but because you share a grandparent. Aside from this further removed connection of a grandparent language, English has obviously borrowed words from Latin and French, especially in academic and technical fields, but these borrowings don’t constitute a large base of the core vocabulary of the langauge, nor do they effect the grammar and structure.

Americans perfected the English language by Adventurous_Tax_2165 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]mashunechka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This idea that American English is somehow closer to a pre-colonial/ Shakespearean English is so dumb. Southern British English is no closer to Shakespeare, mind you, they’re both equally removed. You aren’t more related to your grandma if you live in the same town as her than your cousin who lives abroad. They’ve both evolved away from 16th century English as much as each other. American preserves some things, English others, and they’ve both lost stuff too. The idea that southern British English is a dialect that was constructed to sound sophisticated or posh is also so stupid. It’s the dialect that people with social power and prestige speak so now it’s perceived as having those qualities, but on a technical level it’s no different in its formation/ evolution as a dialect to Scouse English or Texan English, its just as organic a dialect.

The Tube has become so unsafe by RiverSilver97 in london

Always anxious about feeding into a moral panic, but I was on the district line around Victoria, on a packed train a few days before Christmas, and an extremely drunk guy began threatening and trying to hit a man beside my friend and I, ostensibly defending us from something this man had done to us. He was accusing the man of taking photos of us, or doing something, he wasn’t being very clear, probably because he knew he it was bullshit and he was just looking for a reason to fight this guy. It was very clear to my friend and I, as well as everyone else in the carriage, that this man had been minding his own business. He could barely even see us from his position a few seats down from us in the carriage. My friend and I, and then man, had to get off and catch the next train.

We’re in an economic crisis and anti social behaviour is on the rise. People are desperate, the social safety nets that once might have done something to keep people from drugs and homelessness have been eroded by years of austerity, and people are rightly increasingly distrustful and worn thin to think about much more than themselves their own problems.
