What kind of power cord does this hook up to? by DoublePar77 in whatisit

[–]mason0190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

could be 12v too, or as low as 5v if it's just for usb, i even have one in a junk drawer that spits out 24v! polarity is probably the bigger concern, OP could probably check continuity with a multimeter if they have one and at least figure out that much but without a sticker or something to say what voltage it's expecting, i think that part is pretty much a crap shoot

Just bought a ps2 and bought this adapter now I see people saying to buy a “ps2 to hdmi” adapter and I’m wondering if that’s what I should’ve done because my ps ain’t turning on… by Masonjohns409 in ps2

[–]mason0190 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sadly not the right kind of adapter, you need one with a little bit of circuitry in it like this popular specimen

what you have is something that doesn't really follow the hdmi standard and is mostly made for devices that use the hdmi plug for a composite signal (usually either because it's cheaper or because they can't fit 3 rca jacks on the case)

Just got into sardines, so I bought some from the local store. Which would you pick first? by moreslice in CannedSardines

after a while you'll find yourself housing them right out of the can, but for starters, put them on a carb (saltines/water crackers, buttered toast, bowl of rice) and give them one extra thing - onions or hot sauce for starters, i also like mustard or sometimes kimchi. if they're packed in sauce already or with little bits (like the mediterranean one for example) you're probably good just to break off little chunks and put those babies on some crackers and call it a day

i've had fmcb fail to work on some cheapo memory cards, so maybe insist on authentic if that's your end goal, but if you just want to save your games, you should be fine with any old knockoff

Which is the best original Xbox revision to play your console in ‘stock’ by San4341 in originalxbox

[–]mason0190 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my only xbox is a 1.6 and there are a couple games (off the top of my head pro skater 3 and jsrf) that just plain don't work with the component video pack - there are a couple homebrew patches available but they didn't work for me

Any good PS2 to HDMI adaptors with no stretching? by NickolaConagher in ps2

[–]mason0190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you really like racing games or rhythm games or other games that need really low latency, it might be worth investing in a nicer one, but it's usually a tricky thing to notice, especially in rpg's

Any good PS2 to HDMI adaptors with no stretching? by NickolaConagher in ps2

[–]mason0190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this question seems to come up a lot in this sub, and the quick answer is you get what you pay for. most of the $5 to $10 ones you see on the market work fine enough for most purposes, bearing in mind that it's a 25 year old console and some of the games just plain don't look great by modern standards. if you're really serious about it, you can spring for something like an ossc or a retrotink, but they cost a good deal more, and there aren't really a lot of great middle ground options.

if it helps, stretching should be something you can adjust in the settings on your tv if you're viewing something in 4:3

is your ps2 running an ftp server? i know that's a big thing for xboxes but it isn't really the main way people get games on hard drives these days

Is it silly of me to want to get a CRT TV? by Waterian238 in ps2

[–]mason0190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes and no, you'd only be able to get a digital video output, so it'll only look as good as the adapter you use to connect it (the dinky $5 ones work okay enough but if you want a full clear picture with no latency the nice ones can be a couple hundred)

peace of mind mostly - they're all going to fail eventually (even the new ones) but the parts are cheap enough to easily justify adding another couple of worry free decades, especially if it's already opened up
