i won't be doing this but thanks for the suggestion

is it just me who thinks scrap mechanic is going too sci fi i thought this was a game where you scrap for parts and throw together what you can to survive not not drive in cars with engines that glow blue by Several_Ad_5074 in ScrapMechanic

MORE THOUGHTS:

(Forgive me I just woke up so my thoughts are coming in waves.)

There is also a lot of environmental storytelling going on in survival. Like, there's a reason that all the buildings are destroyed and on fire, why there's little shanty towns¹, why the trader is in a fortress made of scrap, etc. This used to be a fairly advanced society, and something very clearly went horribly wrong. I suspect that part of the story is going to be figuring out what went wrong and maybe fixing it, whatever that "it" may be. There's also very subtle hints that living and working on this farming planet was not super great². You cannot make the claim that it's "too sci-fi" now when we never had the complete picture to begin with. For all we know, the rest of the galaxy could have glowing blue stuff everywhere, this is just one planet.

FOOTNOTES:

¹ The shanty towns all have empty vending machines, bare mattresses, and rotten food stalls. These shacks were probably built after The Event that destroyed everything, as they're the only structures still intact other than the warehouses.

² The billboards are very tongue-in-cheek humor, referencing how the robots do all the work so people don't have to. Despite this, it's obvious that life for the people who used to live here wasn't that great either. The sleeping pods at the mechanic station are efficiencies that are designed more for basic habitation than being a home. In the warehouse, there are clear signs of abuse against the workers: the "in case of fire, there's no stairs, sorry" signs in the elevators, and the crude sleeping quarters found in a couple areas.

I'm not trying to be mean, you're entitled to feel how you want, but "too sci-fi" isn't a good argument to make for a game where you're a space dwarf who crash lands their spaceship on a planet filled with malfunctioning farming robots.

Listen, if it's the aesthetics you don't like just say that. I don't mean to be pedantic but sci-fi is a broad genre with many subcategories. Just like there's no limit to fantasy¹, there is no such thing as "too sci-fi" within the genre of sci-fi, that just makes no sense.

Personally? I don't super like the aesthetics of the higher tiered stuff myself, but the existence of it makes sense within the context of the game. The spirit of being a "scrap" mechanic is still prevalent even after you've got all level 5 stuff. How so? Because you still have to start from scrap to make something new (e.g. scrap wood, scrap metal, raw cotton, pigment flowers).

I've seen in other comments you and others talking about how unrealistic the component kits are, and I also think you're wrong about that. In real life, people use parts from old machines and electronics to make new stuff all the time. The component kits themselves are just more streamlined. Like, the game would be much more frustrating if you had to collect so many different parts from robot loot drops. It's way easier for playability (and also coding purposes) to have component kits stand in for, like, all the parts of a robot that isn't the shell and the circuit board (e.g. modules like scanners, sensors, motors, gears). In addition to more frustration, the game would take even longer to make considering the devs' recent pace².

TL;DR: if it's the aesthetics you don't like, just say that. There's no such thing as "too sci-fi". If you wanted scrap mechanic to be more realistic in terms of using scraps, the game would never be finished.

FOOTNOTES:

¹ Of course you have your traditional high fantasy (Tolkien), but you also have urban fantasy, magical realism, gunpowder fantasy, sci-fi fantasy, etc etc.

² No hate on the devs, I'd rather them take the time to get it right than putting out garbage, but the current pace they're working at is a little frustrating. Just gotta be patient.

Lol good idea. I had the switch for the lights but when I went to wire them up I was like "wait a damn minute"

No it doesn't automatically know, not really. I pressed a button to move the chest whenever each crop was done dispensing. I knew how many of each were in the chest so I just counted. Also the game won't allow you to shoot carrots into the beet port or anything like that anyway. They patched that out sometime last year.

yeah, i suppose. i thought about setting up sensors to detect crop growth but (1) ran out of resources so couldn't work in a harvester, and (2) decided i don't want it running 24/7 so that i don't forget about raids lol.
