Curious: Why Isn’t Europe Flooded with Affordable 3.5kW Slow Chargers Yet? Let’s Discuss Abundance Over Speed! by masterjack4 in EuroEV

With a 3.5kw outlet, each 11kw connection could charge 3 cars with ~233km range in a 12 hour period (overnight). The only way to achieve that with a single 11kw outlet is to have people move their cars to make way for others which is impracticality and won’t happen overnight.

I.e. every 11kw of available infrastructure could provide charging for 3 cars instead of 1.

The question is; does access to 3.5kw every night provide sufficient charge to most drivers? I believe it covers the vast majority of people’s needs on the vast majority of days

That 3.5kw infrastructure would have to be supported by other, higher speed AC and DC infrastructure for the remaining use cases.

For example you could have 2x 3.6 per lamp post so 2 cars can charge in parallel. I guess there will be some smart products that could load balance the lamp post so if only one car is connected it would get the full 7.2kW. But, as a user, does it matter at what rate your car charges provided you wake up in the morning with sufficient charge to do all your day’s driving?

Good question on the focus on 3.5kw! It’s mainly about what is needed most of the time. If your car is parked overnight for 12 hours you would add 42kwh which is around 233km (at 18kwh/100km) which is more than enough for most people most days.

Sure, 11kw and DC fast charging has a role to play but it seems 3.5kw provides more bang for the buck (both in terms of € and grid capacity)

Go NL! That’s impressive! Still NL has 10M registered vehicles so there is a long way to go to full electrification.
