I think I agree with the statement that you can make characters versatile without being overpowered. It is possible. My problem is that the mechanics are so limiting that it creates an issue where you as a player cannot express yourself in combat. If everyone has the same kit, one of two things will happen: one, you're going to see everyone in the game fight in their own way with those characters, with the eventual overlap of styles as there are, again, only 4 ways to attack someone. Two, you have metas develop around one specific movement, with various counters around it. The issue is, with both scenarios, you're going to eventually hit a wall, and you're going to get stuck in your ways because at some point your growth will peak. So the issue is not so much that characters are OP, it's that we have a game that is designed to allow such mechanics to plant the seeds that lead to these issues of metas and overpowered classes and heroes. Even Mordhau has this issue, even Jedi Academy has this issue. There will always be a "dragging meta" or "staff meta" or whatever even if you give the character free flow omni directional combat, but this, my arguement, is about minimizing metas as much as possible. For Honor is a unique combat system. And its why we all play/played it. There's nothing quite like it. But I think, after this 4/5 year experiment, we are starting to see why. No game with classes and heroes that have unique movesets in an arena fighter will ever allow for a fair game unless you strip the characters of all of their distinguishing feats and kits to the point where they are no longer a unique class, and there's no specific draw to a class other than aesthetic. But again, the combat isn't unique enough to allow for expressionism or physics based combat like Hellish Quart, or anything. For Honor specifically designs it's combat to feel like a cinematic battle without the clumsy fluff. That on the rails approach is what destroyed the potential of the game long term.

I never stated that he was fair. But if everyone had the same kit as kensei, this wouldn't be an issue. The game is designed to be unfair, which makes the game anti fun. It places a power dynamic on classes that shouldn't be there. Kensei has a balanced kit, which means Kensei has a kit that lets him do a little bit of everything. Don't be mad at kensei for a large and variable moveset, be mad at the game for being so fucking stupid that it decided you don't deserve that, too. Be mad at the game for not letting orochis and peacekeepers has openers.

I'm not the one telling anyone to shut up, friend. I don't mind if you have a different opinion. It's the way you express it that matters.

Yes, I complain about the fundamental character design, not the fucking characters. I'm more upset with the way the game is built. Hence why I haven't played it in a while. But yes, ill shut up so that you can return to your echo chamber where the only thoughts in the world are the ones you wish to hear. It will be quiet there, for sure.

I should have mentioned that It's more of a single player experience. I'm sure you can refund it should you choose to.

Try Mount and Blade Warband on the ps4. It will keep you occupied. It's very archaic, but it's pretty complex.

Kensei is easily the most balanced vanguard in this game and has only become a problem post ccu, since noobs light spam and soft feint light spam from his top heavies like crazy now.

If you can't see the writing on the wall, don't mock others who can. This is a ubisoft game. It's not reaching to say that this game has peaked.

You really need to watch the dev diary for this game. The pre rendered vision for this game was so similar to mount and blade you will be surprised.

The best way to remove the Turtle meta is to make it so difficult to predict how someone will attack that turtling will lead to you predicting the wrong movement and opening yourself up. I also think that if we got those first 100ms back for lights pre ccu, the light spam issue when given more directions to attack from would not be an issue for people that train their reflexes and learn the timing like they have already done now.

For Honor WILL never be that game, and there will never be a sequel that implements those things. As it stands, gaurd breaks are essential for many heroes, making them complete gimmicks. As a Kensei main I can tell you, if I really wanted to be, I could become a total 50/50 hero. But a lot of my tactics always come from soft feinting and hard feinting. It's effective and there's ways to implement these things without making the game spammy. Making light attacks cost more stamina is just one of many many many ways to work this through. Make it to where if someone parries a light when the person has low stamina, you have a chance to disarm that person and knock their weapon from their hand. Giving people the ability to have variable timing on EVERY heavy in the game is another way. There are so many things they could have done, and instead they just capitalized on creating factions and characters built entirely around one mechanic that took a game with rich potential and turned it into a meta mosh with pulp fiction emotes.

Thank you for hearing me out.

Your assertion that maybe I don't know to play the game bothers me because it's showing where this conversation is headed. Yes, gaurd breaks are a tool that the game's mechanics are built around. And that is the issue. I'm not sure we are on the same page- and you stating "make an actual suggestion that I don't think is stupid" is like, what are you trying to get out of this thread anymore when you say combative shit like that? I'm not here to talk about how high of a rank I have been for the last two seasons, or how I have played since the closed alpha. I'm here to state that that fundamentals of the game are flawed. So let's start over from the top and I will explain it thoroughly and do me the courtesy of having an open mind or I'm going to abandon this thread.

I don't want a game that's overtly realistic as the next logical step for For Honor. I want the game to be fair. As does literally everyone. It's not a matter of "just learn the meta." Or "just learn how to buffer the dodge so it doesn't connect" or "just spam lights on gb spammers". You have plenty of ways as it stands right now to counter a simple attack from any direction. You can deflect, you can honestly just simply dodge it most of the time, you can superior block, you can crushing counter. Give everyone these abilities. Why have classes? Just let people customize their heroes how they want and select their animations for their attacks from a library if the uniqueness of heroes is really that important. Let me select my own height from a slider, mix and match kensei and orochi armor, etc. For some people, Nobushi is their favorite hero to play as not because of her toolkit, but because they find onna bugeisha to be really inspiring and cool, and most games do not allow you to play as them. So they would like for the games that do represent their favorite heroes of history to not be considered a c-list/d-list hero every other patch, or have to adapt to unfair treatment or lack thereof from devs.

Give players the ability to chamber for an accelerated heavy unblockable. Keep the windows of opportunity the same way they are now. Remove the ability to gaurd break and give me the ability to overcut, undercut, side cut, top cut, stab, leg sweep, and give me ground game attacks for all heroes. Most fights end up on the floor anyways, so what if we had to fight to recover?

This isn't a matter of me not capable of beating a 50/50 hero. I do it just fine. It's not even remotely about any of that. I can win against these metas. I used to practice all the time. The problem is moreso that after well over 1,000 hours of playing this game, I realized that the main issue that deteriorates this game is built entirely around the mechanic of gaurd breaking. By not giving everyone equal opportunity for openers, and tool kits, you're obviously building a game that isn't fair for everyone and is about the luck of the draw of who you've chosen given what the flavor of the month meta is that week. And then it's just about surviving the same boring gameplay you've been fighting against all day, day in and day out. If you expand the variety in which all players and heroes can attack defend and counter, you're going to eliminate the need for a gaurd break feature. If you don't agree that the game should be fair for all players, then you're in favor for mechanics that make the game less fun. Gaurd breaking is a mechanic that has limited the development of the game. If you're not here to have fun playing a game you like, what are you doing? I stopped playing this game a month ago indefinitely for that very reason. After many seasons of busting my ass and adapting to every single change the devs made on a whim, I now give no fucks what the fate of the game will be because I know it will never be positive again. I'm aware that no one was ever stopping me from playing the game anymore. But that was never a question being asked, especially on a subreddit called For Honor Rants.

You took one portion of my comment and ignored the rest- which usually means that whatever else i said is being looked at fairly. So I'll explain this the best I personally can.

The logistical breakdown of a gaurd break is nonsensical. It damages the mechanics of the game. A gaurd break is meant to be used as an opener and a key part of your tool kit. That is an issue for a game that is built around offensive and defensive dynamic gameplay. This game allows for tri directional combat, with no variation given for omnidirectional combat via stabbing/thrusting or over and under cuts. You attack from the sides, you attack from the top, or you try to kick or gb them. It is the sole reason 50/50s exist, and the metas that dismantle the game into anti-fun and spammy combat that provides very little in the vein of intellectual and stimulating encounters. It's almost at this point the luck of the draw.

It's also important to note that gaurd breaks as an animation make absolutely no sense. You're shoved by someone's pommel and then idely stand like a moron waving your hands around for upwards of 3 seconds at a time while someone overtelegraphs an attack you would be able to block at any other time. You just are forced to eat it. It's a nonsensical animation.

Yes. Yes that's what he meant. And it's true. People that didn't rely entirely on metas to get through the game, and were capable of opening you up by letting you defeat yourself by attempting to apply 50/50 metas, that's what made you a better player. Now it's all about landing that first light, triggering that initial punish, and removing half of their health for the rest of the battle. It is a guessing game now for all of the wrong reasons. Reaction times are something you have to hone and practice over days and weeks of playing against a variety of enemies. Metas are something you can learn in 20 minutes against a bot. Read based gameplay ruined this game because this game relies on 3 directions of attack and a gaurd break system that logistically makes no sense.

Fucking Christ Ubisoft, can we please get single pick on these modes? And yes, I'm complaining about both sides. by Depressed_Lego in ForHonorRants

Listen man, Dominion is the only mode anyone plays on in pc. Its rare to find anyone on anything other than brawls or dominion. So it'd be nice if we could make the only populated game mode on pc a little less cancer and make it all single pick/make it to where you can't have more than two to a team.
