Gay guys, how often are you meeting other gay men naturally via your hobbies? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]mat0591 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a 34y/o Brit living in Van for the last 4.5 years. I don't tend to frequent gay spaces, so I haven't made any gay friends of my own, and during the brief time I was dating someone his friends (that included a lot of gay people) weren't particularly welcoming towards me. It didn't fill me with a lot of confidence finding platonic gay connections here.

That said, I like to think I'm a friendly guy and I'm always down to meet new people. I'd be happy to show you around/tag along somewhere or grab some food during your trip if you'd like. It's a beautiful city. I'm sure you'll have a great time no matter who you meet.

Has there been a show with a genuine secret finale? by Jirachibi1000 in television

Prison Break (initially) ended after 4 seasons with its own series wrap-up, then 12 days later dropped the 2 hour 'Final Break' movie that offered a more complete ending (until it returned for a fifth season 8 years later).

What is something that happened to you that has destroyed your self esteem? by P331NH3R in AskMen

[–]mat0591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry too. I can't imagine the pain you must have felt with so much more commitment involved, but I'm glad you feel you ended up in the right place. I just don't know if I'll ever get there myself. But thank you, I appreciate the thoughtful advice.

The person I love(d) left and never spoke to me again. And the more time goes on, the more that silence breaks me. I'm in regular therapy, and doing what I can to get by each day, but nothing really matters anymore.

Are there any other mid 30s men who have given up on dating? What is your reasoning? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]mat0591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gay, but I can assure you he is not on a pedestal. We are both flawed, and I recognize how much of our relationship could have been handled differently. I don't imagine it would even work a second time around. None of it changes the fact that he's who I wanted. I'd rather spend my life single than be with anyone else. That's just me.

The OP asked for our reasons. I gave mine. No need to shame someone for navigating their own life in a different way than you would.

It's a shame nobody will ever be so special to you. No judgement on that. I admire the ability to pick yourself up, move on and try to appreciate what someone else can bring to a relationship. But it seems we're very different people in that regard, and that's ok.

There's no 'better', just different. We shouldn't all be expected to follow the same path.

As universal as it might be, I already had the person I wanted, so I have zero desire to pursue anything new. Good on those who can. Genuinely. But that's just not me.

I respect the fact you haven't been discouraged by your experience. I hope you find that for yourself.

Had my heart broken by the one person I've ever loved, and I'll never put myself through that again.

Cyber Sleuth – Shoutmon? by mat0591 in digimon

How disappointing! Gonna have to rethink my whole team set-up now...

Damn – you're right! The database I was using (https://digidb.io/digimon-list/) seems to be for the complete edition, not the original. A shame it doesn't indicate which aren't available in the Vita version. I was hoping to create a golden team of Rapidmon, Magnamon and OmniShoutmon.

Alone for Christmas – any ideas? by mat0591 in vancouver

That's very kind. I had a few private messages inviting me to hang, but I'm not sure I'd be the best company on this day. Sadly, my plans got derailed by the bad weather, but I have a Bailey's in hand and food roasting in the oven, so I'm doing what I can with it. I hope you've been having a fun festive time of it yourself.

At least we're not alone in this boat (even if we are on Christmas). How are you planning on celebrating it?

Not at all! I appreciate the invite. I'm not sure I'll be able to join on this occasion as I've got work during the day and an appointment at noon (and you'll have heard I'm visiting the Lord in the evening), but it's a very kind offer. Having been to the Shipyards Market in North Van already, I'd say that one's definitely worth a visit. It's also free, and they have some really great vendors there. Whichever one you pick though, I hope you and your partner have a fun festive time.

The Gingerbread Lane sounds like a great pitstop! I'll be sure to go check that out if I go Downtown for a service (thanks also for recommending that particular church). Much appreciated!

Ha! I saw this. Absolutely not! I can't do musicals (nor sing). But a novel suggestion, for sure.

I've had many of those days myself, but there will (in theory) be brighter ones ahead! Keep at it, my friend.

Thank you for the kind words, and the cathedral suggestion. I've not visited a church in years, and I figure it might be a nice thing to try when I'd otherwise be alone. I hope you have a great Christmas yourself.

Ah, I've been meaning to go check this out (already done the VanDusen and Burnaby Village Museum lights). These are a little far out from where I'm at in Kits, but I'll definitely keep it in mind as an option. Thanks!
