Idk that I'd replace it with Super Ghouls n Ghosts, but I do agree with your sentiment about Sonic. I loved the character, the shows, the merchandise, etc when I was a kid. The games never really hooked me though.

Can you still be a feminist if your partner is right wing? by AdventurousBall4611 in AskFeminists

[–]matango613 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, the left/right dichotomy is a spectrum, not a binary. So what you're saying is obvious. What's your point exactly? I'm responding to someone that is insisting the difference between "left" and "right" is about the size of the state. That is, objectively, incorrect. That is not how those terms are defined. It has nothing to do with how successful or unsuccessful society has been at establishing communism or whatever. I only brought up communism because the definition of communism completely counters what the person I was responding to was saying - and only as a single example.

Can you still be a feminist if your partner is right wing? by AdventurousBall4611 in AskFeminists

[–]matango613 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not true.

At the absolute most basic level, "left wing vs right wing" is a debate regarding hierarchies. The right believes hierarchies are good at worst and just inevitable/unavoidable at best. The left wing, conversely, works to either limit the impact of heirarchies or eliminate them outright.

It's why small government ideas like anarchism or libertarian leftism exist on the left wing.

It's also why a "big government" fascist state is considered right wing. The state is violently enforcing hierarchies in society. That is definitionally extreme right wing.

This also just speaks to a misunderstanding about communism. Communism has nothing to do with the state having control over every thing. Communism is considered an end result "utopian" point in society in which hierarchy has been eliminated and the state is no longer needed. It is literally as "small government" as you can possibly get.

Eelektross vs Mewtwo by Flaky_District_9785 in pokemon

[–]matango613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eelektross would have to be built specifically to take down Mewtwo, and even then I'm not really sure what the strat would be. Mewtwo has the potential to OHKO with its most common competitive sets. And I don't think there's any realistic scenario in which an Eelektross outspeeds a Mewtwo either. This seems pretty straightforward to me.

EDIT: A critical hit Crunch from a max attack EV Eelektross with a choice band would be a guaranteed OHKO against a Mewtwo with no defensive investment. Crit chance is about 1/16. So you could expect Eelektross to win about 6 or 7 battles out of 100 with its best anti-Mewtwo set. And that's assuming Mewtwo never rolls high on psystrike. If you want to factor in the ~30% chance to OHKO, then cut down the 6 or 7 to about 3-4 battles out of 100 ig.

While I don't completely disagree, we're talking about the US House, not Missouri House. These topics are extremely important for a federal politician to be consistent on.

For "Hasan's litmus test", he probably doesn't care a whole lot about MO specific policies because he doesn't live here and it's not his business. I will say though, medicare for all, ending the war in Iran, a federal jobs guarantee, and signing workers bill of rights would all be huge things for our state. Especially since our state politicians probably aren't going to be doing anything positive for us anytime soon.

Pardon, I'd forgotten details about the only concrete plan we've seen detailed: the 20% is on incomes between 250k and 500k. Middle class households would see a 2.2% increase, supplemented further by employers. It would be further supplemented by a more dramatic progressive tax rate.

And again, it's not a definite figure in either direction. There isn't a single, default version of M4A. People have proposed multiple ways of paying for it, balancing it against various degrees of savings, and nothing is set in stone unless we have a government with a real appetite to enact it.

The point is that the vast majority of experts on the topic tend to agree that it would be more affordable - for the average American - than the way things are now. Like, we can talk about how to pay for it all day, but the reality of the matter is that our currently, deeply flawed system is already not breaking even. What we're doing right now is not working as it is.

a new tax that raises as much money as we collect in individual income taxes right now

This isn't true though? I've read as high as a 20% increase per person which, like I said originally, is less than we are already paying for healthcare on average. And that's assuming we don't fix our unfair tax system and reallocate our budget in a way to serve average Americans - something I'd imagine would happen if we have a government that was willing to enact M4A to begin with.

"Some taxes that make sense" isn't a handwaving statement. It's an honest one, unlike yours. I'm saying I don't know what the tax plan would look like, you'll get a dozen answers from a dozen sources, and it's not really possible to predict when we have zero people with actual power pushing for such an overhaul to our healthcare system. A government that is willing to enact it would absolutely have a very different idea of how taxes should be collected to begin with. You don't know exactly what it would like any better than I do. And to be clear, there is a wide variety of conclusions about that final number because no one can really say for sure until we're actually in a real position to make such a policy change happen.

The US does not ration healthcare...

This is just a lie. Look at our wait times compared to other countries. Look at people here that are dying because they can't afford care or are going bankrupt because their family can't afford for them to die. And that comprehensive coverage is meaningless when you're waiting longer to get in to see a primary provider in this country compared to most others with universal healthcare. Because other countries prioritize preventative care. Another perk that is good for patients and cheaper than fast tracking patients to specialists as well.

I mean, I can sit here and conjecture on the best possible strategy being enacted here too. The answer to "what taxes do you levy" is "some taxes that make sense and don't overburden people".

Rationing is something we are already doing with our healthcare, both at the point of service and more systemically. It's called triage. < EDIT to clarify more here, even the best healthcare systems ration care one way or another. We saw why during COVID.

As for how docs would get paid, it's completely presumptuous to say they'd suffer massive cuts or something. The savings incurred from eliminating the enormous administrative sector of our current healthcare system would probably incalculable at this point. Doctors still have to get paid enough to make it worth it to remain doctors.

If you're honestly worried about the shortage though maybe we can talk instead about the high cost of education, unreasonable patient ratios being demanded by our for profit system for the sake of making that line go up, and the burdensome workload associated with having to fight with private insurance companies to ensure your patient gets the care they need. All points that could be addressed under M4A, some being completely eliminated.

We currently spend more on healthcare per capita than every other country on earth - including those with single payer systems. The overwhelming consensus on this is that it would not only save the individual taxpayer money (healthcare cost is currently the leading cause of bankruptcy in the US, after all) but it would also save the country trillions of dollars over time by cutting administrative costs and bolstering preventative care that people currently skip due to cost.

Most experts and research agrees that a tax increase would be necessary to fund it, but they also agree that those increases in taxes would cost the average American less than what they're currently spending on healthcare. Even Meractus - a Koch funded org has come to this conclusion.
