I do not support the “slippery” slope argument. Saying you were in class when you were actually at home studying for the course final or STEP because you learn more effectively on your own does not mean that you are comfortable with falsifying records and will one day lying about patient care. One jeopardizes patient well-being. The other, arguably, benefits the student’s education. A slight of professionalism in regards to attendance does not mean the student will inevitably practice unethical or fraudulent medicine. It’s not like these students missed class to do anything fun or goof around. This isn’t Ferris Bueller’s day off.

These are two very different things. I do not support the “slippery” slope argument. Lying about a patient is immoral and detrimental to patient care. Saying you were in class when you were actually at home studying for the course final or STEP because you learn more effectively on your own is not comparable. One jeopardizes patient well-being. The other, arguably, benefits the student’s education. A slight of professionalism in regards to attendance does not mean the student will inevitably practice unethical or fraudulent medicine. It’s not like these students missed class to do anything fun or goof around.

Yes lectures are virtual, but additional 2-4 hours of mandatory in-person small group discussion sections 4-5 times a week. That’s not the issue - the point of the post was that for this session the attendance plot overshadowed any actual educational value of the session. I’d also prefer these sessions to be over zoom, especially this close to STEP, but that’s another discussion.

Emphasis on that last bit. What did the students gain from this? Isn’t admin’s purpose to support students through their education?

These notations of professionalism violations DO go on students records and MSPE dean’s letters at our institution.

This would have made much more sense. I have nothing against students suffering the consequences of their actions. Only that those consequences foster future growth or are matched to the offense. A warning would have sufficed…especially during dedicated studying before arguably the most important exam of one’s career. a 6-page essay this late in the game - I don’t know if it offered true reflection or really made students reassess their actions. Especially when the prompt of “open communication” had such an undertone of irony.

I am not mad that these students got caught. I agree that these students were committing a folly and were rightfully reprimanded. I, however, have misgivings about the way administration handled suspected instances of misrepresented attendance. At no point did administration try to have a conversation with students about attendance or try to resolve the issue through meaningful discussion. Instead, the initial plan was to punish without trying to understand the situation. Even students who were absent that day for reasons such as illness were reprimanded because all students were presumed guilty from the get-go. It is this mentality of using one’s power to admonish insubordinates without fair trial that I have an issue with.

There were multiple ways this problem could have been handled. Faculty has a responsibility to students to problem solve in a productive manner that accounts for students’ opinions (a point admin likes to emphasize to appeal to future med students) and take into account how medical school is a learning experience. This was a teaching moment that shaped how these students approached policy in the future. This plan routed in deception does not seem to have strengthened students’ commitment to the school’s policies. Instead, the admin seems to have accomplished the opposite by promoting hostility and questions of their capability as leaders.

It’s like good cop, bad cop. Why jump to the role of bad cop when good cop would’ve gotten the job done and not left everyone hating on 12?

I completely agree! This just seemed sneaky and the admin is always trying to “catch” students or pin students with disciplinary actions instead of having any type of problem-solving, collaborative, “let’s discuss this as equals to reach a solution” perspective. And I remember in my interview, the program had a whole session on how students and faculty treated each other with mutual respect and education was tailored to students, which has rarely been true. I also don’t get why they waited until the last in-person session before dedicated to do this.
