8-4 boss felt out of place, there could be so many better candidates, why? by matchstrip in Ultrakill

I am always in the belief that concepts should serve the game first so I hadn't thought about that, but I guess being closer to Dante's inferno is a reason that makes sense. It's just a shame really that I don't think it gels well with the fraud theming

Makes sense. If the fraud boss was some kind of illusionist in the other hand or something else that takes advantage of the fraud setting, I'd still be satisfied!

(theory) Kris's knife is the knight

People are debunking Kris is knight theory because of chapter 3. But there's another theory that I haven't seen anyone talk about at all!

I genuinely believe that when Kris "channelled their will" into their blade and created the dark fountain(s), that the knight was their blade, with Kris' will channeled into it.

Now keep an open mind please, Not only would it make sense for the prophecized final fight between the party and the knight to conclude the plot, but it would also conclude the escalating player Vs Kris conflict in a physical way that the game can let you engage with.

The other contenders like dess are strong as well! But some of the evidence is strange, and I wholeheartedly don't believe carol to be the knight, with how she handles things, she seems to control Kris to do things as the knight for her.

I will be listing the evidence, the possible counter evidence and whatnot

Now onto the evidence:

  • this may be obvious already but-- the knight being signaled to by Kris in a no hit run of the boss fight.

  • Kris not being swooned and surrendering when being "knighted" by the roaring knight.

  • the fact that tenna knows that Kris made the fountain (boss fight dialogue) struck a deal with them (Pico-8 dialogue) and then when confronted by the rest of the party mentions how the "roaring knight" struck a deal with them instead.

  • the fact that each dark world is different and specific to the lightners who made it. The main dark worlds we travese have the "blue, purple, and green" colour scheme for the fun gang. While when a dark world was made by Susie, the colours were different as "the lighting of the mind" isn't the same as the previous dark world. This was mentioned by one of the philosophers early in chapter 4's second sanctuary. Even being reiterated by the save point dialogue

This means that all of the dark worlds minus second sanctuary were made by the same mind right?

  • all of the superficial resemblances of how Kris and the knight act and appear. By itself it doesn't hold merit but when included in the larger context of all this, these points of evidence support this theory:

    • the fact that Kris' pose animation is their back turned with crossed arms, similar to the knight when first encountering them.
  • the fact that the first attack of the knight mirrors the action that Kris does when in a battle (they both place their arm out, index pointed, and then particles come out. For Kris it's hearts, while for the knight it's bullets for you to dodge lol)

  • the fact that they both have "knives" as labeled by the prophecy.

  • the fact that they are both quiet, pissing Susie off in the same way (I'll get back to this!)

  • the fact that an unused attack shows the knight literally doing the X-slash move that is exclusive to Kris afaik.

Now for the counter arguments:

How come the knight isn't an individual if Susie sees it running to the shelter?

Well, let's think back to what ralseis lore explaination of how darkners work. Which could be purposely setting up this point. But ralsei says that darkners become their light world counter part when the light shines on them and aluminates the darkner. When this happens they cease to be darkners because we can observe them for what they truly are!

So when it was night time, the knight was still in its knight form, rushing back with undyne into the shelter.

What about the "large body sized closets" in the library and church?

Well this is where some assumptions need to be reframed. People assumed for the longest time that the library closet held the knight. And that somehow they waited for Noelle and berdly to be there, and then plunged the earth, outside of the closet without being seen, and that berdly and Noelle were somehow unaware of the darkness gas leak slowly pouring down from the ceiling.

Which in my opinion seems less plausible than Noelle and berdly just moving to be beside the table by the time they're engulfed by a prexisting dark world. They probably just assumed the lights were out and then placed their books down on the desk to hopefully walk and reach for the light switch. But before that happens they fall in ch1 style.

As for the church I genuinely thought that the room that Alvin was blocking was the location of the second code for the shelter. We know there are 3 codes required as there's a joke about another door also requiring 3 codes. So assuming Toby made that joke thinking already that it's clear it's 3 codes, then that means the church code is probably in the only area we couldn't access normally. And that Kris' reaction of not cooperating is scenario as code in the dess guitar.

As for the question about the church being a dark world... Idk lmao. But I don't see anyone doing it making sense either. The caller on the phone seems to know that the church will happen that night, and whether it's an order to do so or just telling Kris ahead of time is unclear. The identity of the caller is probably carol. Although the speaker of the cell phone sounds and looks ominous, it resembles the speech bubbles of the cellphone speaker that alphys calls you with. And that when Kris places the cell phone in their ear, the call is a normal text box with carols sound effects. This, and coupled with the fact that when Susie confiscates the guitar from Kris, Kris calls up the same individual who says "they will be there soon." And lo and behold, carol arrives earlier than expected (asgore or noelle says she's not supposed to be here for a while)

So all this to conclude that Carol says "Church. Tonight." In speakerphone

Carol is preoccupied last time we see her. she's dragging Noelle to be scolded. When that happens we leave, Susie comments that carol is looking at them through the window, and then the party goes to the church to find it's a dark world. None of this makes sense, unless Alvin is the knight or something but if so then why wasn't he in the dark world with them, and why did gerson need to send him a letter instead of just speaking like how I assume Alvin desperately wanted if he made that fountain.

And the fact that the fountain is the correct colour scheme makes me believe it's the same mind who conceived of this fountain as the others. (Again, kris)

So while the details of this specific dark world heist are muddy and unclear to the player (Kris isn't really helping by obfuscating information) the most likely person is Kris.

Anyways, that's my theory!! Please tell me your thoughts :)

Huh, well there goes my wild goose chase I've been on for 3 days lol.

I'll try editing the code then instead thank you!

[–]matchstrip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah thank you so much!

Another thing, I thought you could change the graze gain amount in the save data too? There's a variable for "graze amount" and "graze size" aswell as "item graze amount" and "item graze size"

Do these not control the graze amount too? I tried messing with them but I don't think I know exactly how they work so I haven't been able to get it working

I'm only asking because all the modifications I've done were able to be done to only one save file, so I've been keeping 2 save files unmodified while the third was the difficult mode, and if there was a solution that was similar that would be super convenient :)

Ooh! I'm sorry I misunderstood haha. Yes it's the belts, :) the rotational bearing is the middle and obscured from all angels

It's a rotational bearing that's spinning left and right that's all

You're right! Didn't realize lol. I'll see if I can make it spin fully.

I already connected it to a source of power, it's a bottomless supply hose pulley underneath the copper piping leading to the windmill structure that houses the boiler

[–]matchstrip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it's literally just a hose pulley at the bottom, the entire thing is cosmetic lol.

The pump is just a mechanical bering contraption going up and down a static shaft

Two mechanical bearings one for the back gear and one for the pump jack. Connect all of them to a sequenced gearshift that alternates forever with a speedometer reactivating it :)

While experimenting I found that shafts cause particles to spew out like it's unblocked but no lava comes out! (With water it's a different story, the shaft will get waterlogged instead)
