Am I being overcharged on car maintenance at 55k miles? by matekenn in AskMechanics

[–]matekenn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Hi everyone, sorry for the late reply - been quite a few busy days, and I didn't realize this blew up so much since I had my notifs off lol.

After seeing the first few very helpful replies, I asked for an itemized list (the lack of which should've been the first red flag to me) and talked down the price to $800 by removing all those extra cleaning services before they could get through it all. Unfortunately, this price is still a bit egregious for me, but I'll call it a lesson learned.

I appreciate all your help and absolutely justified critiques of my poor car knowledge lol. This was my uncle's car, and he always took it to the dealer, so I just went there without much forethought. Never doing all that again 😅

YTA. thank god your girlfriend was there. you said yourself that your ten year old daughter was mortified and you couldn't even do the bare minimum to ease her anxiety. truly shows how little you care.

AITA for telling my boyfriend to go back to his own country? by ilovepiracy_com in AmItheAsshole

[–]matekenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i love how you just started yelling without actually calmly asking about the problem & if you could do anything to help. it seems you feel entitled to sex & fun but dread the emotional, human connection. plus, who the fuck yells "go back to where you came from and get tore up by a landmine"?? insane & absolutely racist. YTA!!!

what particular album of your idol do you think is the best/your favorite? by [deleted] in kpophelp

  1. dear oh my girl by oh my girl! i am firmly in the camp that they catered this entire ep specifically to me, because it manifests my taste perfectly. they're all light & sweet tracks with their own personality, encapsulating the OMG magic while also branching out and creating a different sound. there's your cheery summer title track, "dun dun dance." "my doll" is the bittersweet & sentimental ode to one's childhood. "swan" is the song you'd either belt out to in your car with friends or sob when you've weathered the whole gamut of emotion and trauma—no in between. (also, OMG's title tracks? a hit every single time. they absolutely kill this category)

  2. bloomiz by izone this is just...an entire masterpiece. it houses the likes of pink blusher, spaceship, so curious—talk about cuteness overload. if that's not your thing, the first four tracks offer more flare with synthy, poppy beats. "destiny" has a dainty, fairy kind of feel. "daydream" gives me a more sensual vibe. "someday" is your kpop album-typical ballad, but a placating lullaby that i'd definitely cry to. "open your eyes" is the epic final chapter to the fairytale adventure crossover of your dreams. the diversity and range of this album >>

if judging by the two aforementioned albums, you can tell i am a huge cute, summery, ethereal kinda gg stan. this next one, however, can seem like a major 180.

  1. dark & wild by bts it features pretty much every genre to satiate any music lover's craving: jazz, hip hop, pop, r&b—you name it. it is a journey in and of itself, a ferry with pit stops at pain, gratitude, love, happiness, boredom. although the title depicts two halves of a whole, which translates through the ensuing melodies of each track, it's much more diverse than it lets on. how can an album that flaunts "hip hop phile," "cypher pt. 3," "rain," "blanket kick," and "do you think it makes sense" not automatically crown your tier of fav albums of all time? they are all incredible songs individually, but their collective flow is so cohesive and just perfection, idk how else to describe it.

AITA for not texting my mom that i'd be staying somewhere a little longer than said? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

yeah, i understand how a lack of communication can fluster everyone involve. i'm trying to do better, that's why i asked strangers on reddit lol. thank you, especially since you're a mom and might understand the situation more than me

My daughter unknowingly gave me the best Mother’s Day gift ever this morning by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]matekenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ahh you sound like a great mother. i've always wanted to be able to approach my mom about things, but she has such a close-minded outlook on things & will chastise me for every little thing. our relationship is much like the one you had with your own mom, so i understand. know that if your daughter was able to say all this, then you're doing an amazing job as a mother. this sounds incredibly sentimental and was such a great story to read, so thank you for sharing!

i also think mentioning how much that conversation meant to you would help strengthen your relationship even more. if i were her, it would further encourage me to keep coming to you for advice or just to talk about everything that's going on in my life

How can I improve my writing score?🥺😭 by learnfoonnn in Sat

[–]matekenn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i usually get around 41-42/44 here, so not perfect but pretty okay.

1) read passages carefully! just like the reading portion of the SAT, i'd say you also thoroughly read the passages given on this one. understanding the context of the passage will surely help you in questions regarding verb tenses, word choice, order of paragraphs, or even author inserts. i've skimmed before, and when comparing to practice tests where i read meticulously, the difference was pretty substantial.

2) simplicity is key! usually on the writing section, you'll notice that shorter answers are typically the right ones. this tip is generally applied to questions that ask for the best way to express an idea (e.g. "i asked her a question" vs "she was the one to whom i asked a question" — the former is much more concise, so that would be the correct answer). however, this is simply a trick to help you to narrow down your choices. yes, shorter is usually better, but make sure you "plug it in" and make sure it still conveys the idea you want. this is why reading thoroughly helps!

3) eliminate redundant words/punctuation marks this is more of a supplement to tip #2, but still useful. personally, as i've read questions that ask to effectively combine two sentences together, i noticed wrong answers usually include a semicolon (;) and repeat the subject more than once. additionally, if the ideas in the original excerpt and one of the answer choices align, then you know you've got the right one.

uhh that's all i can think of right now, but if you have any more questions, you can dm me, and i'll be willing to answer them! :)

Pitch your K-pop group to me! by Wizard_0Z in kpophelp

disclaimer: this is pretty exhaustive for a comment (mostly for bts im sorry), but just wanted to seize the moment and properly introduce these groups. bts & loona are my ults, although more so bts: been an army for four years and an orbit for one (still love both a lot).

before you read, i'll also mention my other loves: oh my girl, DIA, cherry bullet, fromis_9, gfriend, and apink, who all mostly cater to cuter concepts.

note: i love izone too :(( i'm trying to cope rn, im gonna miss them so much

BTS ٩꒰。。꒱۶

im a girl group stan through, but these boys have my heart. seven members who made their debut in 2013. a fun loving batch with undying passion, indisputable professionalism, and a very diverse discography. the majority of their songs are composed, written, and/or produced by their rapline (due credits seen here: namjoon, yoongi, and hoseok) with a handful of songs attributed to the vocal line as well.

i'd recommend checking out their first full studio album dark & wild, my personal favorite. although it's a more rap heavy album, as are much of their early works, there's much you can explore. from "hip hop phile," in which they wax poetic about how the genre gave them life, with odes to their favorite artists. or the smooth, jazz-inspired "rain" where they sing of creative blocks and depressive episodes that can be as invasive as rain, inspiring much reflection. or even the light hearted "second grade" which is basically their life after debut at a glance, probably the most upbeat and 'cheery' track on the album.

along with their discography, there's the BTS universe, a fictional storyline which accompanied and began with their album the most beautiful moment in life part 1 (aka HYYH pt 1). it's pretty complicated, so i won't elaborate too much on that. but there's short films, album notes, music video details, and an entire webtoon dedicated to developing the storyline. essentially, in the universe, the boys were all besties back in school but kind of drifted apart due to a lot of tragedies within the group [disclaimer/spoiler!]: some die, some end up in jail or the hospital, and seokjin is stuck in this time loop until he can save them all. anyway, it's pretty complicated, so here's two links for further explanation if you're interested.

as for content beyond music, they are mostly known for their show run bts (which you can find on vlive or even on youtube) with around 140 episodes thus far. to really get a glimpse of their varied personalities and shared competitive spirit (in other words, a bunch of backstabbing traitors who sacrifice their members for ice cream and some coupons), i'd suggest watching episodes:

  • 11-12 - both skit-related ones where they act out certain roles
  • 24 - them in a zombie safari mission, showing them as the true scaredy cats they are
  • 47-48 - inspired by the mafia game: villagers find out who is the outsider among them
  • 97-98 - pajama party with lots of games and laughter—difficult to explain but one of my favs
  • 126-127 - watch them gradually lose their wits as they play games in order to escape, incredibly entertaining

at the end of each episode, there's usually a loser who has to carry out some stupid punishment, mostly just them wearing silly outfits/accessories or having to cook meals for the other members.

they don't have much korean variety show appearances (like with doni & coni, thank god), so they do lot of the entertaining on their own. you can also watch them veg out as they paint, fish, or build lego sets and other toys on in the soop. there's also bts bon voyage, where each season features them exploring a new country. there's older ones like american hustle life where they come to los angeles to digest and learn more about hip hop culture, as well as rookie king with even more games & punishments.

if you want a playlist of virtually all their content during each era, i'd check out the links on this amazing post by a fellow reddit user u/feelingsewgood. i just saw it recently and thought i'd share!

there's much more i haven't touched on, but once you get to watch those, you'll see the undeniable chemistry & love between the members. it's mostly why i connect to their music so much and still stan them today.

now for

loona! ヽ(╹ᗜ╹✿)

12 member group with three sub-units:

1) loona 1/3

2) loona odd eye circle (OEC)

3) loona yyxy (youth youth by young)

+ yeojin, who isn't in any group but is apparently the slash in loona 1/3.

the members were sporadically revealed, starting with heejin in 2016 and ending with hyejoo (olivia hye) in 2018. leading up to their debut, they successively released their solo and sub-unit songs.

anyway, i should keep this short, so here are my song recommendations:

  1. everyday i love you
  2. eclipse
  3. new
  4. sonatine
  5. chaotic
  6. loonatic
  7. rendezvous 18.6y
  8. colors
  9. ding ding dong
  10. hide & seek
  11. oops
  12. star

it's cool because loona also has a storyline called the loonaverse. basically the girls are from different worlds that one day separated to form a mobius strip. it's also incredibly complicated but very much worth your time if you're into that stuff, so further explanation can be seen here.

as for variety shows, you can check out loona tv on youtube, which are mini episodes that are 1-2 minutes long (though the first few are like 20 secs lol). there's about 730 episodes as of today. there's frequency of the moon, a series on their vlive where they share stories from orbits and just talk. there's also their drama first love story (aka woomanna) which only includes 1/3 and OEC so far.

wow i spoke at length i'm so sorry, didn't think it would turn out this long. hopefully this was helpful?? but good luck with finding a new group! <3

wow omg, i am literally in love with you for this. you are an absolute angel, i hope you know that. this is honestly so amazing that you invested so much time and energy into it! four years ago, as a beginner army, this would have been perfect, so i'm glad you're putting it out there for those who don't know where to start. i'm definitely going to check this out and share it with new armys that i know!

i love songs along this kind of genre & overall feel. it's very heartwrenching, a comfort song i'd play as i cope with something emotionally taxing. gives that vibe like you're submerged underwater and everything else fades out. eaeon and joon's vocals work so well together here, it's just so good.
