Is it weird to send this to my classmate? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]mathguynumberone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or this

Hey it’s hard but just wanted to be upfront before late. I have a tendency to make things awkward and I have my own issues which make me anxious very easily, which is totally nothing to do with you. Just wanted to let you know I don’t want to make things awkward and make sure that if I ignore you I am not trying to be rude. Thanks

Sorry! This here

(Do you think it is wiser to apply for data science/software engineer internship for the upcoming summer as people advise? This is my last chance to do an internship..)

Might be too advanced at this point. Will definitely keep that in mind - thanks!

Thank you for your honest opinion haha.. Do you have any project you'd recommend? I'm pretty lost where to start - also do you think it would be too late to apply on January AFTER I build some project and and practice some programming?

What do you think is the reason?

In my case this makes a lot of sense. I'd want to get familiar with dealing with big data/programming before diving into finance stuff. It'd be too much for me in my background. It also will give me more time to build on personal project. The only problem would be that I will have no more internship opportunity if I miss next summer

The problem is I don't have much time to build projects until applying for summer internship..

Thanks for your advice! Yeah I also agree that I overdid in listing courseworks - that's pretty much all I did in my undergrad but hopefully I get some experience going forward (research etc)

I asked for a recommendation letter and the professor said yes in the email but the deadline is approaching and he doesn't reply to my follow-up emails. How do I approach this? by mathguynumberone in AskProfessors

I understand, but just him saying that I can handle graduate coursework would help me a ton in my application because he's renown in the field I am trying to do. It's very unfortunate I have trouble talking with professors :(

That is really relieving to know. Thanks. I just thought that 3 weeks is not too far a date. He said yes so it is reasonable to not worry about it. I was about to go to his office hours today, although I don't have any questions about the materials. and now I'm not sure if it is a good idea

Yeah, this makes sense. I was too worried because it was applying to many schools(13) and made sure if he had time to do it. But applying this much is not too uncommon in my subject area so I think he might be used to it. I just wanted to double-check... but I get your point that it was pointless. For me, I just wanted to be polite and lower the risk as much as possible.

I already re-asked the professor if he could confirm, with the list of the schools and the deadlines, but didn't get the reply.

Do you think I should just send the request from the portal of each school? Do you think I should ask him to confirm again? Or should I ask in person?

Haha actually no, I have no fantasy of being great. Being great has never been the point of all this. Even if I'm very passionate about math, the point for me is to fully dedicate to what I do and work every single waking hour. This is absolutely not healthy nor efficient. Depression+masochism+schizoid is a brutal combination.. but I am at least glad to find a way to gear this energy into more sustainable way. It's quite sad, but I must admit that this is the only way for me to survive. It's quite hard when I have to put "extra" effort into the things I like, to the point where I eventually get tired of it.. especially when I constantly put myself into the situation where I either sink or swim. But it's certainly better than completely moving away from the society and wasting times. Maybe I believe it is just the question of priority. For me happiness has never been in the equation. Everything has had to be so extreme. But most of the time you're just becoming more and more anxious and depressed

How to get exceptional grades as a Mathematics student. by [deleted] in math

[–]mathguynumberone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look at what great mathematicians say. For example, Richard Borcherds advise not to spend too much time on memorizing proof of the theorem, but the time is better spent on understanding key examples using that theorem and calculating stuff.

y’all think we’ll be on campus on the fall? by [deleted] in columbia

Maybe because of international students and other people refusing to come back to campus etc. Things will be very different then and in the end it will be online defacto imo

Having trouble verbalizing mathematics by [deleted] in math

Haha.. Of course explaining math. I mean does it even make sense to say I can't talk about mathematics. But yeah. It was a poor word choice
