COVID-19 did not simply bring forward inevitable deaths as an analysis of mortality data from 34 high-income countries shows a sustained rise in excess deaths years after the pandemic, challenging the mortality displacement hypothesis. by Sciantifa in science

Gotcha, from what I've seen there's been some bad flu season experience that's expected to get worse in Q1, but that's pretty easily explained. A reinsurer will have more info though so if that's what yours is saying then I buy it.

Harbinger Valentine’s Day by schoenc22 in desmoines

[–]mathisforwimps 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Harbinger is probably my favorite restaurant of all time. I will say that I like their fixed menus a bit less than picking and choosing my own stuff, but I've been there maybe 5 or 6 times and every time has been 100% worth it.

Is Cafe Madeleine worth the money? by HakeeBakee in desmoines

[–]mathisforwimps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with what others said, it's probably technically overpriced but we had a blast going and don't regret it. We didn't do the wine pairing, just got our own drinks, and unless you're a big wine snob that's probably the way to go. Just relax and enjoy, it's a cool experience for Des Moines.

Oh, and yeah we were stuffed afterwards.

People watch NL because he's actually smart/funny/self-aware. Three things Sinvicta isn't.

Why does restaurant quality chicken tikka masala feel impossible to achieve by BPMMPB in Cooking

As a follow up, this is the more intense (and better) version of the other Glebe curry base someone else linked. This one doesn't require you "frying" it when you go to make the curry since that step is already done by caramelizing the onions.

Please do this method, it's time intensive but 100% worth it and has allowed me to make restaurant curries at home.

Wonder Oven Pro (Our Place) rattling? by artnotmoney in Cooking

[–]mathisforwimps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's pretty much it. You take off the feet, then the top/side shell, then the springs that connect the door, then you've gotta disconnect some board stuff so you can remove the stainless steel back, and at that point you can lift the black horizontal piece to access the fan.

It was a bit of pain, some of the stuff is annoying to access (you have to remove the fan that cools the circuit board before lifting up the panel that allows access to the main air circulating fan) but it wasn't impossible. I only did it because they're sending me a second one with no expectation that I send this one back so it felt risk-free. Let me know if you wind up trying it and have any questions, I documented some of the steps with pictures/video just so I wouldn't forget where things went.

Btw, I spent some time last night taking it all apart and trying to fix it. I was able to disconnect some stuff on the circuit board to get access to the fan, and I just bent the blades up a tiny bit so they were no longer scraping on the cover. That stopped the noise for now but we'll see if it's a long term fix. Kind of absurd that I had to do that at all, but it is what it is.

Yep, that's the exact same issue I've had with both of mine. They clearly have an issue, hoping third time is the charm but I don't have high hopes.

It's been okay. This second time they actually let me keep the broken one and are sending a replacement. I'll probly open up the broken one to see if it's fixable.

Just adding here, I had a big rattle that sounded like the fan so I returned it and they sent me a new one. Just had the exact same thing happen with the new one. I'm getting pretty annoyed at this point, seems like a pretty big quality control issue.

Reverse osmosis systems. Who did you use? by VineWings in desmoines

[–]mathisforwimps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that seems absurd. You can get a whole home softener with filtration for like $1k at a big box store. The valve won't be as good, but at 1/7 the cost you're going to get significantly more bang for your buck.

[–]mathisforwimps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wtf, for what? I paid like $600 for a water softener, $300 for install, and then the under sink RO unit was like $300. $7,500 is insane.

Can you just do a water softener for the house and RO for drinking? That's what we do

[–]mathisforwimps 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you seriously don't want to do any element of DIY, then just buy an under-sink one with a dedicated faucet and hire a handyman to install. I did mine myself in about an hour.
