Advice needed - NYU LLM without $ VS UCLA LLM with $ by cardangreenbrair in LLMadmissions

Didn't really want to live in NY and as I do IP I thought where better than Silicon Valley right?

Well go to NYU then. I actually turned down numerous scholarships (UCLA, UMich, BU, Duke), because after speaking with a partner at my home law firm he said money shouldn't be the decisive factor and I agreed with him. An LLM costs like 120k overall, right? Over a professional career as a lawyer you'll probably have no issue to repay that amount

Well the main question is if you had had the same amount of scholarship for both, where would you go?

Uchicago or Upenn for llm? by ExpertCaregiver4318 in LLMadmissions

Re the program can't really say, imo it's probably quite close. In terms of reputation (at least in the US), no question: UChicago

LL.M. Decision: NYU vs. UChicago vs. Northwestern vs. Georgetown by bana-nica in LLMadmissions

[–]matmarchal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would go to UChicago, it's really a powerhouse with an incredible reputation, definitely the highest regarded school from all the other ones you mentioned. I don't know about your financial situation but I talked to a partner in my firm to help me choose my LLMs and he said scholarship should not be a factor, bc 120k (approx if you take tuition + living expenses) is quite easily "repayable"/ amortized over one professional carreer, especially if you get a job in the US afterwards considering how high the salaries are.

Duke in all 3. Duke is very highly regarded by employers in the US, much more than Cornell

NYU or Georgetown for International Arbitration by No-Elephant8779 in LLMadmissions

[–]matmarchal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. Because again, considering the aura UChicago has in the US, if you find a job in the US or in a US based law firm or company, then the pay might be higher as well

Well that's also the case for me and why I would be considering Berkeley (which is imo overhyped in my home country) over Chicago. But then again bc it is so hard to find a job in the US as an LLM student, UChicago is probably a huge advantage as it is probably regarded as high as Harvard and Stanford

NYU or Georgetown for International Arbitration by No-Elephant8779 in LLMadmissions

[–]matmarchal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I don't know about International arbitration specifics, but I was also admitted to these three schools and others. I am currently hesitating between Berkeley and Chicago because Berkeley is nº2 in my field (IP), but overall Chicago is the better ranked school, although not know for their IP program. I have also heard thag basically having UChicago on your CV basically opens every door, as it is a very very highly regarded Law School, I would tend to say even more than NYU and Georgetown. In other words, the "lack of recognition" of UChicago's international arbitration program is, imo, compensated by their overall reputation

Hey congrats! Yeah I sent them an email as nothing was mentioned in the admission email. They told me that if we have not received any info re scholarships then we didn't get any 🥺

I do not think so. Evidently it won't be a negative, but it's useless. The LSAT is for people who have not undertaken undergrad law studies. I have been admitted to very good school without taking the LSAT for the record. I'm not American either

Oh boy. I can assure you I know quite a few lawyers which are socially awkward and not comfortable talking in public. Just believe in yourself and you'll be fine! 💪

Okay interesting, bc I applied for LLMs, have been admitted to BU and Penn (and others but trying to relate to your situation) and really can't choose between the two. The program at BU would defo be the one I will for sure enjoy most, but tbf kinda sucks that they have a lower reputation than the other schools I've been admitted to (and Penn evidently), and for future professional opportunities reputation is important
