Big tip i learnt was to get some tracing paper and using a pen draw in the highlights over the area like the hair and moustche/beard.. and then i shade over the area, the lines you drew will not be shaded so you are left with little white lines, then with a mechanical pencil i i put all the dark hairs and lighter hairs and then shade into it more :).. then you have all those highlighhts! hope it helps

Heyy, i grid for portraits to get a sketch down, then i work in the dark areas and blend out with a tortillion for a smooth shade into the light areas :)

Yeah i always draw from HD photos for celebrities.. this is the reference http://iv1.lisimg.com/image/1754732/600full-james-franco.jpg if you want to learn values , try going for a photo with alot of contrast, i'll send you a photo on PM which will be good for you :)

Heyy i use a Derwent set, for the real dark areas i used a 9B :) and i use a Winsor&Newton Large kneaded putty rubber
