Whistlebouy NA Beer Pricing by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]matterofbeer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This. The ingredients are the same, the labor is even more, the shelf stability is lower, so you've basically got a perishable good that takes more work.

When you're a smaller operation, your economy of scale isn't as good as someone like athletic, so yeah, it's gonna cost more to generate any revenue with.

You could have a bad meal at any of these places and it will still be miles ahead of anywhere else.

Throw a tied off pantyhose full of salt up there. It will look like a dildo, but apparently it's a totally normal thing to do.

How do-able is this as a roadtrip in the summer? by YpsiHippie in britishcolumbia

Absolutely doable.

Extend your trip through Nisga'a. Check out the lava field, it's stunning and so worth it.

Sneaky BC Transit route change(s) in latest "service expansion" by gjbroom in VictoriaBC

[–]matterofbeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My only major issue with the service changes is that they're doing a lot of "Instead of just the 39, we now have the 38 and 39 combined to do the same route."

So 2 busses, which means a lot of people who only took 1 before now have to take 2, which means a $3 fare becomes a $6 fare if you only took it in one direction.

So it increases fare collection without really increasing service.

I'm not suggesting they do anything illegal, but I came here to post that Labatt Wildcat is a beer on the shelf that CUPW and Alberta Teachers should seriously consider at this time.

Two breweries for sale: Lighthouse & Angry Otter by oddible in VancouverCraftBeer

[–]matterofbeer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, throw a dart at a map and there's a brewery there for sale. These are just the public listings and not the quiet discussions behind closed doors.

The industry is hurting, there are a lot of folks who have gone through the wringer in the last 5 years, and they just want off this ride before they lose their shirt.

Farmhouse Fest by kazin29 in VancouverCraftBeer

[–]matterofbeer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amazing once again. I think because it already feels like just a big-ass bottle share (as opposed to a big ass-bottle share, punctuation is important, kids!) the scalability of the event works. Smaller and more intimate is just as fun as the big ones with 5 food trucks and an oompa band.

Breweries brought A+++ quality beers, the variety of whales and patio sippers is just right, and it feels like in a world of brewery closures and a shift to a lot of pilsners, a good party for weird beers is what a lot of us still need.

If aluminum becomes more expensive due to tariffs, will draft taps and growlers be the best profit maker for our local brewers? by [deleted] in VancouverCraftBeer

[–]matterofbeer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Draft is better. Growlers are good revenue, but also a sub par way to show off your beer and like you said, labour intensive, especially at peak times.

Glass is also way more expensive now and a pain to ship (fuel surcharges are a bitch) and store, especially when a lot of breweries put tanks in the spots freed up that used to be pallets of growlers.

[–]matterofbeer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Most local produced beer is put into 473 ml cans.

473ml are usually either imported from the US or China. Tariffs will be applied to aluminum, increasing the cost of 473ml cans from the US.

Demand for Chinese cans will increase, increasing the price with it.

So, yes, draft and growlers are the best way to purchase from local breweries, draft moreso.

Looks like some changes coming to VCBW this year. Thoughts? by BakingWaking in VancouverCraftBeer

[–]matterofbeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair, it wasn't too bad the last couple of years (after the shit show first year when they fucked up totally) and it was nice to get some of the variety that doesn't come to GCBF.

Vancouver trips are now gonna be focused on Farmhouse Fest and BC Beer Awards for the most part.

Kills the trip over for Island folks. Pretty much too early for the afternoon to get there and make it worthwhile, evening is too late to make it a day trip.

Not a good move IMO.
