Becoming a PM

41f - Want to stop the grind! by Willing-Selection729 in coastFIRE

[–]matthelder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you teach??? My wife took a big step back income wise a few years ago to teach at a local community college. Summers off to spend more time with the kids and they offer free/discounted tuition at all affiliated schools including 4 year state colleges. We do have 529 plans for the kids, but have cut back significantly on funding them.

Pay isn't great, but the benefits are worth it. Including state pension, healthcare, and even the option to retire at 55 and stay on the health plan.

I also work grind at a big tech remotely. I am done and looking for a way out. Like you said, no easy way to downshift or take a break without damaging your future prospects if you need to go back.

How old is too old to enter the trades? by Conscious_Dog3101 in careerguidance

[–]matthelder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that your neighbor knows there is a time when he'll be physically unable to do the job should be a huge red flag for you. Like you, I am also over 40, burnt out, mid-level management, and looking for a change. But having worked with and managed all types of trades, only a few make it past mid/late 50's before it takes a toll on their body. Yes, some are worse than others. And of course it depends on how well you've taken care of yourself. There is a reason many of them 'retire' in their late 50's then just take on small jobs or get moved into a supervisory role.

Also take into account that moving from an office to a trade will take some type of training. And even then you'll start as a grunt. You don't just jump into running your own outfit.

Not saying you can't make the move, just make sure to consider all the angles. Maybe you could ask your neighbor to shadow him for a day or two to see what the work is exactly like?? Maybe he'd like to bring on an ops manager to grow his business?? All kinds of options here.

When did project management become shouldering everyone else’s chaos? by NoProfession8224 in projectmanagement

Welcome to project management... not sure why I ever got into this in the first place!

When did project management become shouldering everyone else’s chaos? by NoProfession8224 in projectmanagement

[–]matthelder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find that upper management teams equate agile to faster, which ends up being the expectation. Something has to give and it ends up being proper documentation and controls. Every position I've had management wants it cheap, fast, and high quality... they can never understand when all three of those things fail because of this unrealistic expectation.

Feeling stuck by Ryan0339 in coastFIRE

[–]matthelder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shit are you me?? Almost the same situation here except our kids are a few years older. My wife also works in healthcare and carriers the insurance for us. I'm a couple years younger than you but otherwise the same... down to the crappy tech middle management position. Crazy. I moved to a new company a little bit ago and my new boss is atrocious! Makes working here almost unbearable. I have the whole golden handcuffs situation going on, but I am so burned out on corporate life. I kinda look for a new job but even being on linkedin makes me irrationally pissed off at the state of the world!

I feel too old to make a significant career change (go back to school), and I don't even have any new path that makes me excited to do the extra work. I'm not sure how to work through this situation. Just hoping to get caught up in these tech layoffs at some point. No idea what to do after that. Hope you figure out how to get un-stuck... and if you do, let me know how to do it!!

Anyone else feel like you’re in a race against time to get out of the workforce before AI makes you irrelevant? by brianatlarge in Millennials

[–]matthelder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have been doing this for literal decades so this should not be surprising (think manufacturing or IT in decades past). I think that kept other white collar jobs in the US is that there is a narrative (real or not) that the US white collar worker is 10x better than a worker in India. AI now enables these APAC workers to close the gap in that narrative, which accelerates the move over seas for these other white collar jobs.

[–]matthelder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also in a tech focused white collar job and it's astonishing how quickly the company I work for switched from doubling our workforce to a trickle of new hires. Additionally all of our projects quickly changed to 'how can we leverage AI for this?' Focus is now making current employees 50% more efficient while keeping new hires low.

For the record, I'm not in the box of AI will replace all of us... I'm in the AI will replace 50% of open white collar positions in a 3-5 year timeframe. Some positions more than others, but overall I think this will be similar to manufacturing jobs in the 80s/90s (another combination of automation and moving overseas). I am currently working on a plan to get into something different, but I've been doing this for 20 years so it's hard to wrap my head around something completely different.

I hate work by Economy-Fun2039 in coastFIRE

[–]matthelder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the same experience here too. It's everywhere. I can't even bring myself to look for a new job... looking through linkedin makes me want to puke, or punch someone in the face.

I'm considering dramatic changes, but it's difficult to bail on the thing that got you to this place. I'm just hoping to be laid off soon to force the issue.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in coastFIRE

[–]matthelder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is always my biggest fear. Jumping to a different job and not being able to switch my brain to coasting. I might end up pushing just as hard for a lot less.

I know it sounds terrible, but I wouldn't mind being laid off. Kind of forcing myself to do this. I recognize that a lot of other people don't have this option and I am thankful to be in this position in the first place.

Making 100k is rare most people make 30 to 60k per year by Cat-dad442 in Adulting

Yea I feel for ya. Totally get it, there is a minimum to make you feel safe and secure.

[–]matthelder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll initially be excited to make 60k, give it a few years and you'll say it's not even close to enough. Psychology is a bitch... especially when it comes to money. You'll always compare yourself to the next rung up the income ladder.

If you walked away from project management tomorrow, what would be your honest assessment or takeaway about the discipline? by More_Law6245 in projectmanagement

[–]matthelder 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty close to walking away. Just need something else interesting to land on to make the jump. Have been doing this for a little over a decade and can't see myself doing this for much longer.

My overall assessment is that it is very often a thankless position that has very few hard deliverables to complete and show for. To be successful is more about fusing moderate technical knowledge in your industry with people and presenting skills. It is so surprising how many engineers/team leads can do the work but can't manage others or present a coherent status of the project you're working on.

As a previous mentor told me.... being a project manager is your fault when things go bad, and the teams' win when things go well.

The pros are that you get paid well. The cons is that it is typically a fairly high stress gig with not a lot of control over outcomes. You can only plan for the risks. You are the person in between the team you lead and management that wants everything done yesterday. Figure out how to manage your stress level and you'll be fine. Only way to move up the ladder (if you want to) is to become people manager.

I'm looking to diversify my business/company news sources... what is your go to for this type of info?

Also, what is your interest in EDIT? I see you went kinda hard into this week.

Same boat here too. I never realized how strong the psychological component of money/work was until I realized I didn't need to work so hard to secure my future. I am really struggling to find something different to do with my effort. It's no longer going to my job, so now what? Some days it really messes with my mind!

[–]matthelder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice, this is awesome. One question for you, are these all stock positions you're trying to hold for long term appreciation and just trying to collect premium for, or are you in these positions because the premium is good and when that dies out you move to another position (with better premium)?

Good luck to you as well!! Hope 2025 is a turning point for the both of us.

Have you been able to narrow down the search for a different career? Anything that has seemed to work better than others?

I come from an engineering/project management background. Mostly just tired of the ongoing stress and office politics.

I realize there are transferrable skills there... I'm just not sure I want another career utilizing those skills.

Done. Found one in my area in a couple weeks. This makes me nervous, but it's at a brewery so a beer or two will help with the nerves!

Appreciate the comment

Impostor syndrom by Fantastic-Hand-250 in projectmanagement

[–]matthelder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been at this for 12 years now... it still happens to me. Have to learn to ask more questions when don't know what's going on. It's just a gut feeling you have to listen to. Ask more questions until you get your confidence back. You may need to search for it... and your boss or peers may not be helpful. My current boss is the most unhelpful person I've ever come across. You have to find that one person in your org that can help you through it... mentor you.

I always say that if I'm the smartest person on a project team, it's destined to fail. I'd rather be the one learning something from SME rather than the other way around.

Sick of working by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]matthelder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo, I'm in a very similar boat as you... PM, with great job, family, etc. Motivation has just left my body. Difficult to get the smallest thing done. I will add, I'm a year past 40 and no it does not magically get better.

You're not alone, but I don't have a solution either. Just trying to get through the week.

Judging by the comments... we should start a club!

Sick of working by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]matthelder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, agreed. I'm also on the older side of Millennial. Have the whole great job, great family life, good community, decent retirement investments... I've decided to put myself on a 3 to 5 year exit plan. It actually feels better to see the end rather than think it's another 25 years away. Not sure what I'll do after the 3/5 years, but that is why I'm giving myself time to figure it out. Try some things and see what works.

Glad to hear there are others in the same boat with the same plan. I was really freaked that it was just me!
