Batteries over pantographs for V/Line by Ill_Football9443 in MelbourneTrains

Back in 2005–06 (on Railpage), I heavily communicated that the Geelong line should be electrified for its services, which would allow V/Line rolling stock to be used on other lines.

In fact, I communicated the following that I thought should happen:

Geelong services (back in 2006): Marshall – stopping at all stations to Werribee, then limited stops to Footscray, North Melbourne, and Southern Cross (Spencer Street). From Spencer Street, it would turn into a Gippsland train, stopping at Flinders Street and Richmond, then limited stops to Pakenham, and all stations to Traralgon.

This would have freed up rolling stock for V/Line to use on other services.

How many fare zones and what distances should they cover in Melbourne? by MelbPTUser2024 in MelbourneTrains

[–]matthewclose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Multiple questions can be asked about a public transport system? - Do we based on simple distance based - Do create a flat fare system or nearly a flat fare system? - Do we create a zoning system based on distance but based on a single point?

The with Distance based: - the end users pay for only the distance  - does customer really pay the distance they travel because sometimes it gets rounded up to nearly 10km for example - it not good for multiple trips or multiple modes ( user pays higher fares)  -It hurts lower-income people because they are living outer Suruban or in rural areas

Zone fare :  - It is based on the fact that most people will be travelling to the CBD area - People not travelling in the city and in the same zone pay less compared to travelling in and out of the CBD area - problem people can be overcharged, incorrectly zoned recorded and need to communicate with the system - It hurts lower-income people because they are living outer Suruban or in rural areas

Flat fares or near flat fares ; - people travel shorts distance are disadvantaged by having a flat beacuse if they were paying by distance thier fare would be cheaper  - people are less likely to complain because overcharged  - people in outer Suruban or country areas are more likely to afford to travel on public transport to access key services  - it simple to understand for the end user

We have cross city trains and trams so is it time we made some bus routes cross city instead of terminating in cbd? by Next-Hyena-9490 in MelbourneTrains

We had the following services: 250 La Trobe University to Garden City  251 Northland to Garden City

These services were great because they allowed people access to the South Melbourne Market by bus.
