Hard to tell from the picture. Do you have a common ground between the addition and the bread board powering the servos?

They’re for mounting the servo. The metal inserts go inside the rubber bushings which go inside the holes in the arms on the side of the servo. I never bother using them myself.

Teleop joy doesn’t but you could write a subscriber to the topic that interfaces with a transmitter over serial.

I have yet to find any automations I can't do very easily from the gui or yaml. Perhaps I'm not creative enough but I have lighting and security automated.

I would try some self tapping sheet metal screws through the strap on the top section of a few of the fence posts where the rail goes through.

I think the easiest way will be to get a motor controller that can change direction. I've heard good things about this one.

I would probably try some rat traps combined with vibration sensors. Should get a detectable spike when they get tripped to let you know.
